GOSSIP FROM THE QUEEN CITY.
(Special to the “ Star.*) AUC KLAND, February 19 Ship's Crew in Court. Twenty members of the crew of the Kaituna appeared at the Police Court this morning charged with failing, without reasonable cause, to proceed to sea in the steamer. Counsel asked for an adjournment in order to bring witnesses to substantiate the men’s grounds of refusal, and pointed out that they had only been served with summonses at four o’clock yesterday afternoon. The Union Company's solicitor, however. objected to an adjournment bcvond Monday, stating that the men were obviously in a position to advance their reasons without further delay. They had some idea about bent plates, but every ship had some slight defect of a similar nature. The Kaituna had just come out of dock and was in seaworthy condition. The case was adjourned till two o’clock on Monday. Late Sir Henry Brett. Feeling reference to the death of the late Sir Henry Brett was made by the Premier during a speech at the civic reception last evening. Mr Coates spoke of Sir Henry as a citizen of high ideals, who had lielpcd in the progress not only of Auckland, but also of the Dominion.
