The City Brigade turned out at 2.13 p.m. to a small fire at 687, Colombo Street, premises occupied by Mr Plampen, ladies' hairdressing and toilet rooms. The fire was caused by a gas jet which had been left burning. The Railway Department was kept busy to-day catering for picnics, eight different organisations holding their annual outings. The stair of Comptons, Ltd., and Sargood, Son and Ewen went to Lyttelton. The Moorehouse Avenue Church of C hrist Bible; School held its annual picnic at Stewarts Gully. The Canterbury Drivers’ Union members were at Southbridgc, a special train conveying them there. The Woolston Tanneries employees journeyed to Little River by special train. The staffs of Andrews and Beaven, Ltd. and the Christchurch Clothing Company went in a combined special to Motukarara. A special train conveyed the Fairfield Freezing Works employees from Ashburton to Timaru for their annual picnic.
