To supply Fendalton with another open space is the object of the spec ial loan proposal of the Waimari County Council for the purchase of an area in Webb’s Road. The council proposes to raise a special loan of £5500 for purchasing the land, and a poll of ratepayers will be taken on February 17. Polling hours will be from nine o’clock in the morning until six in the evening. The cost of the land will be £4500, and the rest of the proposed loan will go toward improvements, the cost of the poll, and the first year’s interest and sinking fund. On Thursday, February 3, a conference will be held in Christchurch between representatives of the Sheepowners’ Federation and the New Zealand Workers’ Union for the purpose of drawing up an agreement as to wages and conditions for men engaged on crutching. The conference is being held in accordance with a recommendation made by Mr Justice Frazer when the award for shearers was issued by the Arbitration Court recently. The representatives of the New Zealand Workers’ Union will be Messrs J. Townsend, C. E. Baldwin and A. J. Cook. The Y.M.C.A. continues to carry out a number of- outdoor functions. The camp at Kairaki still is in full swing, about fifty young men being there, and that particular ramp will come to an end at the end of this month. Weekend camps have also been held, a walking party going to Kaituna Pass on Saturday last, and another party to Brooklands. .The summer gymnasium classes were resumed a week ago, when there were about forty present, but the real gymnastic classes will not begin until March. The Y.M.C.A. has plans of a full programme of physical activities ahead, and a keen spirit is being shown regarding them.
