NORTH CANTERBURY HARVEST IS RIPENING.
The hot -weather of the past -week made a great difference in the appearmice of the crops in North Canterbury, the wheat having changed to the rich golden colour, denoting maturity, very
rapidly. Both wheat and oats have ripened or are ripening with the grain in the primest condition. Most of the oats, and some of the early wheat, have been cut, the farmers having taken the fullest advantage of the line weather, and stacks are beginning to dot the landscape. A little threshing has been done and excellent returns have been obtained. The machines will be all busy within the next week or two, and the exceptionally heavy crops should give them a good run. Following the hot north-wester on Saturday, the weather broke at eight o'clock yesterday morning, a southerly coming up with heavy rain, which lasted about two hours. The weather then cleared up for a time, but in the afternoon the wind veered to the cast, bringing up a drizzling rain off the sea. The rain held up again, however, towards evening, and occasional glimpses of sunshine gave promise of a return to fine weather. Coming after the excessive heat of last week the rain will do a great deal of good in freshening up the root crops and pastures.
