SHOULD RICCARTON JOIN UP WITH THE CITY?
To the Editor. Sir.—ln the “Star” of January 15 your Riccarton correspondent draws attention to the Town Hall at Riccarton being without a nameplate. Yes, just a small affair that could easily be removed ere long when the Riccarton Council may ,be a thing of the past, and that building used for a fire station. library, etc. And when writing of the building one might draw attention to the architectural beauty of the structure. Surely it is far from comparison with other public buildings in the borough, namely, the Boys High School and the churches St James and St Ninians, when completed, not to mention all the beautiful homes. Of course, the ratepayers did not expect something magnificent, but what they did expect was something for the money expended. I think it would be a good idea if the council submitted their plans to the ratepayers before making a hideous pile of bricks and mortar out of the. ratepa3*ers’ money. Another bungling of the council is the time the Clarence Road widening is on hand and not yet complete. It is a disgrace to the council, while the rates are being collected all the time and the south-west area ratepayers will soon feel that they, too, are paying rates for footpaths that are not even heard of. although a start has been made with the channelling, another longtailed job. too. Did someone sav join up with the city? Not a bad plan.—l am, etc., OBSERVANT RATEPAYER.
