MELBOURNE TEAM ARE GOOD SIDE.

SOME OF PLAYERS WELL KNOWN HERE. While some of the names cabled over from Alelboume giving the personnel of the team that will be leaving there on Friday to tour the Dominion will be unknown to New Zealanders, there are a few who are by no means strangers to New Zealand cricket. Warwick Armstrong, for instance, lias been here on four occasions previously—in 1905, 1906, 1910 and 1914. He toured with Australian teams to England in 1902, 1905, 1909 and 1921. He captained the team in 1921 which beat the Englishmen so badly in the test series. Although he has retired from participation in big matches, Armstrong still plays regularly in senior cricket in Alelboume. Hugh Trumble. who will manage the team, toured New Zealand with teams in 1896 and 1900. He went to England in 1890, 1893, 1896, 1899 and 1902. Trumble was one of the finest bowlers Australia ever produced. He is now secretary of the Alelboume Cricket Club, having succeeded Major Wardill* in that office. Vernon Ransford has been to New Zealand four times —in 1906, 1914, 1921 and 1925. He was captain of the side which came over in 1921. Ransford is one of the greatest left-hand batsmen Australia has produced. He went to England in 1909. H. L. Hendry came through the Dominion three years ago with the New South Wales team, captained by Alacartney, and he went Home with the last Australian side. When the New Zealai%l team were in Australia last season, Hendry made 325 not out against them for Victoria. H. I. Ebeling was the fast bowler in the Australian team which was here two years ago under the captaincy of E. R. Alayne. N. Armstrong is a brother to Warwick, and !he is a slow bowler of the same type. As some of the critics describe it over there it is the “breakless leg break.” All the other members of the team are not known here, but they are all regular senior players. Sandford is a dashing batsman, and Rodgerson is also a high-grade player. The side look a good all-round combination on paper, and they should be able to give the New Zealanders a good try-out before the latter set out on tlicir tour abroad. riJR-MrS’ SIATCII. .At Sydenham park.
