The Post and Telegraph Department used t.hn Kirby cable-laving machine for putting down telephone wires near Mosgiel, states a Dunedin telegram. The inventor is Mr Joseph G. Kirby, of Wyndham. The machine cuts the ground to a depth of 26 inches, leaving a scar only a few inches wide and laying the cable at the same time.
