Two Men Make Sensational Escape From Hamilton Gaol.
Per Press Association. HAMILTON, January IS. A sensational escape from custody was made early this morning by two young men, George Huia Brewer and George Curtis, who were in the lock-up at the Hamilton police station on charges of the theft of a car. The accused were before the court yesterday and were due to appear again on Thursday. A constable paid periodical visits to the cell during the night, and at 5 a.m. discovered that the two men were missing, while several floor boards had been ripped from their fastening. A heap of earth scooped from beneath indicated the method of their escape. Even then the exit was Aery narrow and it must have been difficult work for the prisoners to worm their way
through the small portion of weather boarding which obstructed the passage. The smashed cell is a wooden building situated ten yards at the rear of the station. Brewer and Curtis were arrested at Frankton last Friday night and charged with the theft of an Essex car from Ohaupo. Brewer formerly escaped from custody when arrested at Te Awamutu. The country is being scoured by the police for the escapees. Brewer is sft lOin in height, with fair hair and an open countenance. He is dressed in a light grey suit with glace patent shoes. Curtis is dark and sharp featured, sft Sin in height, unshaven and dressed in a dark grey and tweed suit. Both are of good appearance, and about twenty years. Neither is wearing a hat.
