(Special to the “ Star.”) WELLINGTON,*January IS. » With regard to racing permits for the Duke’s visit. - the Minister of Internal Affairs (the Hon R. FBollard) said to-day that arrange- £ ment of dates for both racing and trotting meetings was a matter entirely fon the Racing and Trotting Conferences. Tie said he had never Rttempted to interfere with the dates of meetings or the general internal Workings of a racing or trotting club. His function was solely the granting of Tote permits. He noticed that the Canterbury Jockey Club proposed to ask the Racing Conference for permission to change its dates, so that the Club would be able to hold its meeting When their Royal Highnesses were in Christchurch. That the Club was entitled to do it was not his function, but he could not see the wisdom of holding both a galloping and a trotting meeting on the same day. However, if the Racing Conference ngreed to change the dates it then became a question for him to consider the issuing of a license. He repeated that the matter, of altering dates was purely one for the Con- v ferenees to decide. COSTX.Y PLAYTHINGS. « BLENHEIM, January IS.
