BRIGHTON BOROUGH COUNCIL HOLDS MEETING.

The New Brighton Borough Council met last night; present—The Mayor (Mr J. Gamble) and Councillors E. A. M. Leaver. J. H. Shaw, F. Ward, J. C. Scott, R. Snell. F. D. Muirson, T. Robins and J. M’Creanor. The Medical Officer of Health wrote thanking the council for its support during the year. A letter was received from the Salvation Army thanking the council for the use of the domain on the occasion of the recent camp. The Town Clerk, Christchurch, wrote advising that the Tramway Board’s application for a license to establish a motor bus service between the city and North Beach had not been acceded to. The letter was received. The sanitary Inspector of the Health Department wrote stating that he was going on annual leave, and would be unable to carry out an inspection of rubbish receptacles until his return. Correspondence was received from th© Medical Officer of Health pointing out the necessity to take satisfactory measures to suppress rats in the borough, and asking the council to keep a limited stock of rat poison. It was decided to fall in with the request.. A letter was received from the Post and Telegraph Department stating that authority had been received for the establishment of public call boxes at the intersection of Rockwood Avenue and Racecourse Road, and Richmond Terrace and Jervois Street, and that th© Department was making every endeavour to expedite the making of new types of cabinets. Th© work would be put in hand as early as possible. The Mew Brighton Gala Committee wrote applying for control of the foreshore, and permission to close the road in front of the foreshore for trafflo on January 22. Both requests were granted. The Woolston Band Committee applied for permission to give a concert in the rotunda on Sunday, January 23, Rnd also to take up a collection in aid of the band’s funds. The requests were granted. Letters were received from A- A. Sellars and K. Killeltj’, applying for refunds on their sanitation charges. The Town Clerk was instructed to arrange the refunds. The Standing Committee recommended that the formation of a footpath along Estuary Road from Jellicoe Street to Mr Cargeeg’s property be proceeded with when fund? were available. It wag also recommended that a letter be sent to Mr Goldsmith thanking him for Ills gift of a swing. The recommendation was made that the chairman of works be authorised to continue the sea-wall, North Beach, to the extent of funds available for same. The recommendations were adopted. The Finance Committee recommended that a dog-tax collector be appointed, and that the appointment be left in the hands of the Mayor and Councillors Shaw and Leaver. The recommendation was adopted. The Summer Programme Committee recommended that the Mew Brighton Surf and Life Saving Club be granted permission to run a side-show outside their pavilion on each evening during the holiday season. The recommendation was adopted. Permission was granted the Tenny-' son Street Congregational Sunday School to hold a picnic in the domain on February 12. . Mr F. \V. Freerrpn/ engineer to the council, reported in connection with the South Brighton bridge that all the fourteen pil«?6 for the small bridge had been driven. The pier piles were capped and three main stringers had been laid in place. This work, had been considerably delayed by the holidays. The contractor had stated that ho would soon be moving across to the larger bridge site to erect staging so as to drive the piles, when he would be able to proceed at a much faster pace. There had been considerable argument about his rejecting some of the timber. Last Saturday evening the piles, stringers and caps bad been inspected and the rejection had been sustained.
