Cutts left on Saturday night for Trentham in charge of Centrepiece, Front Rank, Dark Spot, Scrambler and Sudden Storm, who will represent Sir George Clifford at the Wellington Racing Club's meeting, opening on Thursday. G. Murray-Aynsley went north on Saturday night, taking Footfall and Paoercbase to Trentham. * * * * Sagittarius is not engaged on the opening day at Trentham, but it is probable that A. M’Aulay will take him north to race on the second and third days. * # * > Brightling is an acceptor on the first day of the Wellington Racing Club’s meeting, but after his disappointing display at Ashburton on Saturday J. B. Pearson stated that the trip might be abandoned. * * * * Assurance will be the only representative of R. Emerson’s stable at Trentham. He will go north to-night, with W. Scobie in charge. The Gay Lad gelding has been galloping in his customary free style on the tracks. * * * G. J. Pine will leave for Trentham to-night with Crossbow and the two-year-olds, Silver Coot and Don Jose. The two 3'oungsters are useful gallopers and they may show up in some of their engagements. * * * * T. H. Gillett -will take Count Cavour north to-morrow night. The Solfernio gelding is in great heart at present and though he has a big load to carry he will have to be reckoned with in the Wellington Cup.

Rapier has been galloping freely since he returned from his holiday racing in the north. He is still showing slight evidence, however, of the cold which he contracted on the trip, and this may prevent him from showing his best form at Trentham. H. Nurse will take him north to-morrow night. Rapier’s usual pilot, J. Beale, will not be at Trentham and no rider has been secured for the Wellington Cup.

F. Christmas will leave for Trentham to-morrow with Fresco and Oriflamb. Both horses look in the best of health after their holiday racing and they should race well at the Wellington meeting. C. Eastwood will have the ride on Fresco in the Wellington Cup, in which he may’ be hard to beat.

A. E. Wormald will take Frivolous to Trentham to-morrow. She is a useful galloper, but her public form is no at all attractive.

J. Lindsay will leave lor Trentham to-morrow' with Gold Mint. He has been galloping well lately but he was a disappointment at Ashburton, where he faded out at the business end of his race.

J. W. Jennings will take Booster north to-morrow for the Wellington Racing Club’s meeting. He looks in good fettle after his holiday racing and it will be no surprise if he runs prominently at Trentham. The North Island gelding, Tlcislcr, who raced successfully on the West Coast during the holidays, is now at Riccarton, but he will leave for the north to-morrow night. Although Rapine and Star Stranger both figure as acceptors for the Wellington Cup, there is an opinion in Wellington that only one of the pair will start. Mr R. A. M Kenzie will probably start both Clarinda and Piuthair in the Wellington Cup and they are a pair who will have to be reckoned with. * * * >]: Mr Vivian Riddiford has supplied four of the twenty-three acceptors in the Fitzherbert Handicap in Panther, Tone, Wit, and Historic. This two-year-old event, to be run at Trentham on Thursday, should provide pjentv of speculation, and backers of the winner with a good price. S. Wilson, E. A. Kecsing, 11. Wiggins and C. Browne have been engaged for Mr Riddiford’s four. * * * * Ballymoy IF. was responsible for an Attractive track effort at Ellerslie on Thursday, when she defeated Cawnporc by several lengths over six furlongs. Ridden by A. Driscoll, she ran the first furlong in 12sec, two furlongs in 23 -f-s.sec, three furlongs in 36 I-s.®£c, and. running wide at the turn, completed the six furlongs in I min 15 2-ssec. Cawnporc kept with her for the first few furlongs, but she easily drew away from him at. the finish, and was going strongly. The imported mare should go very close to winning a race at Trentham. The honour bestowed upon the Chief Justice by His Majesty the King at the New Year was learned with pleasure bv all racing folk in New Zealand, who know' and appreciate his interest in the Turf and the part he has playerl in its government. To Sir Charles Skerrett the president of the Racing Conference, Sir George Clifford, sent the following message: - "On behalf of the Racing Conference please receive the hearty congratulations of that body on the honour bestowed upon you.” Sir Charles replied in the following terms: "Please accept and convey to the members of the conference my sincere appreciation of their kindly congratulations.”

The committees of the Dunedin Jockey Club and the Forbury Trotting Club each held a meeting recently, and among other things considered the appointment of a joint secretary. No finality was reached in the matter.

The Auckland light-weight, A. Driscoll. will ride Mandane in the Wellington Cup. Mandane has been a disappointment lately, but improved form is confidently predicted for her very soon. She is owned by Mrs Blackmore. whose brother. Mr T. A. Duncan,

won the Wellington Cup last year with Enthusiasm.

The last five winners of the Wellington Stakes were ail penalised, three ot them-—Thespian, Lady Motley and Lady Cavendish —having carried the extreme penaltv, 14 pounds each, while Razzle Dazzle and last seasons winner. Limited. each had seven pounds extra. Mr G. M. Currie, ownerbreeder of Lysander, has twice supplied the winner in Thespian and Motley.

The Auckland jockey, R. Warner, who met with severe injuries when Kawa fell with him in contesting a hurdle race at the Thames meeting on October 30, and who was an inmate ol the Thames Hospital for some seven weeks, was able to leave the institution recently. He is still on crutches, however, and some time must elapse bet ore he is able to ride again.

* * * * Captain Gage Williams is working at Trentham a six-year-old gelding named Mandarcne (Solferino —Golden Pippin). Mandarene was purchased by Mr E. L. Riddiford as a yearling and was turned out and lost sight of until recently. He is showing some promise on the tracks, and will probably make his first appearance on the last day of tne coming Wellington meeting.

A Wanganui writer says that after his race in the King’s Plate Lysander was muscle-sore, but that he is now all right again, and with a few short sprints should be at his best for the Wellington Stakes. Previous reports have said nothing of the drawback now mentioned and there does not seem to have been any sign of it when the Absurd gelding stuck to Commendation over the first mile of the Great Northern Derby

Maioha’s half-sister. Unreasonable, is exactly the same colour as the Hawke's Bay and Wellington Cups winner, but as yet is a long way below Maioha's class. She has plenty of pace, however, and though she may never be so good over a distance as her half-brother, she should win sprint races when well placed.

The fall she had at Ellerslie in the Newmarket Handicap left no ill-effects with Ballymoy 11. (says the “New Zealand Herald”), and she is moving along freely in her work. Ballymoy IT. will probably race at Trentham this month along with her stablemates Roya Picture, Chips and Modest Boy.

When handicapping Mr R. A. M’Kenzie's two mares. Clarinda and Piuthair, for the Manawatu Cup, Mr J. E. Henrvs, under whom they had both been winners at the New Zealand Cup meeting, assessed Clarinda at 8.9, and made her give Piuthair 31b. In the Wellington Cup Mr Coyle makes Piuthair give Clarinda 21b. ■ It is rather an interesting difference, writes “The Watcher,” as neither has been placed since Riccarton, except a minor third to Clarinda in an open sprint event at Woodville. Clarinda was very prominent throughout the running of the Auckland Racing Chib Handicap (one mile and a half) on New' Year's Day. She lay third all the way to the straight, and although

she then faded back and only finished twelfth it was an encouraging effort. Piuthair was the favourite for the Grandstand Handicap on the concluding day at Auckland, but she was not at all prominent in the running. However, she finished fairly well up. Both apparently are seen at their best on hard tracks, which are probable at Trentham, and if they reproduced their Riccarton form they would have something to say r in the decision of the Wellington Cup. -i* S J S Corn Rigs, who now races in the colours of a West Coast sportsman, showed a glimpse of his old form at Ashburton on Saturday, when he led all the way in the High Weight Handicap, lie started again in the concluding event, but had to be content with third place, and he never looked like being any nearer the front. =4* * ❖ * Shandre seemed to be unlucky in his race at Ashburton on Saturday, and a win may come his way before long. * * * * Thorndale. who was favourite for the Winch more Hack Handicap at Ashburton on Saturday, was never prominent. Gold Mint and Brightling. two other well-backed horses, showed up until tiie straight was reached, but failed to stay. * ❖ ❖ SjC Gay Queen showed more stamina than any of her opponents in the Tinwald Handicap on .Saturday, and it was to this she. owed her success. She seemed to be beaten at the entrance to the straight, but she put in a fine finishing run over the last furlong. * * * * Tiff never looked dangerous in the Tinwald Handicap on Saturday, but he is not nearly at his best yet, and he will be capable of improved form in the autumn. * * * * Royal Tractor, the winner of the Lagmhor Plate at Ashburton on Saturday. is a well-grown three-year-old by Tractor from Royal Delight, bv Royal Fusilier from The Brat, by Stepniak from Merisettc. by Medallion from the Apremont marc Huguenot. Royal Tractor has a fine turn of speed, and he may reach good sprint company next season, provided nothing unforeseen happens 1o him. En Route had been off the scene for nearly a year prior to racing at Ashburton on Saturday, when he made his opponents look rather cheap at the finish of the Moreton Hack Handicap. Provided he goes on the right way, he should play his part well in more important events later in the season. * * * * Finora showed a fine burst of speed when she won the Wakanui Handicap at Ashburton on Saturday. She streaked away with a good lead early and never looked in serious danger of being caught. Tt had the appearance of a very attractive performance, blit the opposition could not be considered strong. * * * * Rod Wink was a starter in the concluding event at Ashburton on Saturday, but his form was very poor. lie soon dropped back to the rear, where he remained to the finish. He does not look at all a good prospect.

ASHBURTON RACES. A SUCCESSFUL MEETING. GAT QUEEN'WINS CHIEF EVENT. The summer meeting' of the Ashburton County Racing Club was held on Saturday. It was a new experience for the. dub to race at this period. Usually . it hold* two meetings during the season, j each of two days. This season, however, the spring meeting, held at Riccarton, was limited to one day, so that the club had a spare day available, and this was utilised to run Saturday’s fixture. The innovation proved a great, success. 1 lie weather was perfect and there was a very large attendance, the special train from Christchurch being crowded.. South Canterbury also contributed a big contingent and Ashburton sportsmen turned out in strong force. The club's patrons were amply - rewarded. Good fields were seen out in nearly every event, and there was some very interesting sport. Tlie management of the meeting ‘ v ' a 55 first class. Mr H. F. Nicoll, who has succeeded the late Mr John Grigg as president, lias had a lot of experience in directing operations at racing and trotting fixtures, and he was in evidence through the day, giving a keen oversight in various directions. The secretary. Mr J B. Nicoll. has not taken long to become acquainted with his duties, and he is now established a.s a very capable official. As a result 0.. good management, the meeting went on verv smoothly and provided a very pleasant, day’s outing. Speculation was brisk, the total isator handling £lo.b4_. Proceedings opened with the High Weight Handicap. The scratching of Gav Queen and Waterlow left a field of nine, Sliandre being a pronounced favourite. with Prophets Mark easily second choice. Corn Rigs was smartest out, followed by Prophets Mark, bol<ltown, Master John and Shandre. After going two furlongs Corn Rigs was two lengths in front of Master John amJ Prophet’s Mark, with Goldtown three lengths further back, while Shandre had drifted back to nearly last. They raced without much change to the home turn, where Shandre commenced to move up on the outside. He was in second place a furlong from home, but Corn Rigs only had to be shaken up to beat him by a neck. Goldtown was four lengths | away, with Master John close up. Prophet’s Mark faded out badly in the j straight. Corn Rigs now carries the , colours of a West Coast sportsman, lor whom he promises to be a good investment. He was lucky to win here, however It looked as if Shandre would easily have reversed positions had he been’kept in a de.eent position, instead of being allowed to drop so far back.

Gay Sonnet. Prophet’s Mark and Sir Roy were scratched for the Winch more Hack Handicap, leaving a field of nine. Thorndale. was a little better backed than Gold Mint, with Brightling a good third fanev. Backers were sadly astray, not one of this trio getting into the monev. Gold Mint and Coeh-y-Bondhu were first to show out, and at the end of a furlong they had opened out a gap of three lengths from Brightling and Moratorium, with Calcite and Princess M&falda a few lengths further back. Tliere was no change till they reached the home turn, when Calcite commenced to move up. When well into the straight Gold Mint commenced to tire, while Brightling was well beaten at this stage. A good finish saw Moratorium stay on to beat the fast-finishing Calcite by a neck. Coch-y-Bondhu was half a length away, a neck in front of Gold Mint. Then, after a gap, came Brightling apd Grey Lass, at the head of the others. The winner has always been noted for speed, but it came as a surprise to find him staying on so well at the end of seven furlongs. Calcite put up an attractive performance, as she was finishing fast, and she may soon be a winner. Gold Mint disappointed by stopping in the straight after looking like a winner at the JuSfhe turn. Brightling collapsed in pronounced fashion, while Thorndale was never sighted on the journey. The thirteen acceptors lined up for the Melrose. Trot. Handicap. Patsy Phegan was a warm favourite, carrying more than twice as much money as Amazon, who was a little bettor backed

than Ayr and Miss Dorothy. The favourite broke up at the start, losing more than a dozen lengths before he settled down. Amazon was soon out. in front, leading past the stand from Miss Dorothy and Silvertowri, with Princess Thorpe handy. At the end of three furlongs Silvertown had dropped out, the other three going on together. Passing the mile post Patsy Phegan had run into fourth place, half a dozen lengths behind the three leaders, while Ayr was moving up fast. Six furlongs from home Amazon and Miss Dorothy were three lengths in front of Princess Thorpe and Patsy Phegan, with Ayr four lengths further back. Then Princess Thorpe dropped out and Bonnie Prince, who had begun slowly, made a forward move. Amazon was still just in front of Miss Dorothy when well in the straight, with Ayr. Patsy Phegan and Bonnie Prince handy. A great finish saw Amazon win by a neck from Bonnie Prince, who finished strongly and beat Ayr by a head, with Miss Dorothy another head away. Then, after an interval of a few lengths, came Patsy Phegan, who was not driven out. The winner, who is trained at Addington by W. J. Tomkinson, is a useful pacer, but never likely to take high rank. Bonnie Prince was very unlucky to lose. He did not. begin well and he had a lot of ground to make up over the last, half-mile. He is a very promising three-year-old, likely to win in good company later on. Ayr paced a line race from the back, and was unfortunate in going so fast to get third. Phatsy Phegan has a, good turn of speed* but a bad start settled his ehanc.6. The eight acceptors turned out. for the Tinwald Handicap. The John BradburyCourtly Rose bracket was backed to a very short price, Margaret Birney being second choice, with several others nearly as well supported. Courtly Rose was slow to begin, losing half a dozen lengths. Beau Geste was smartest out. but at the end of a furlong Margaret Birney was in charge, with Beau Geste and Gay Queen handy, while a furlong further on Fairy Herald and John Bradbury were also prominent. Margaret Birney was three lengths clear at. the six furlong post, where Ophir was moving up. Half a mile from home Margaret. Birney still had a good lead, Ophir being in second place, with Gay Queen handy, while Beau Geste was dropping back. Then John Bradbury made a move and at. the entrance to the straight he was just behind Margaret Birney and Ophir. A furlong from the post Ophir was beaten, while Gay Queen put in a strong claim. Getting a clear run on the rails. Gay Queen finished fast and heat Margaret Birney by a neck. John Bradbury was half a length away, with Courtly Rose fourth, followed by Ophir, who tired badly. Gay Queen owed her success to her superior stamina. It was her best performance to date. Margaret Birney ran a. solid race and just failed to stall off the winner’s late challenge. John Bradbury found t lie journey just beyond him. His stablemate, Courtly Rose, was always ; in difficulties after her bad jumpout, which probably cost her the race. Tiff was never dangerous, but he is not nearly ready yet. Scratch ings were numerous for the Lapinhor Plate. In a field of eleven Royal Tractor was a hot. favourite. Queen's Bounty was smartest out, hut Money Mart soon joined her, with J!a Mie heading the others. At the end of a furlong the two leaders were well clear, while Happy Queen and Ma-Mie were next. Racing round the home turn Royal Tractor appeared on the scene, while Tripaway also made a move, after a slow start. Once in the straight Royal Tractor ran up to the leaders and went on to win easily by three lengths. Queen's Bounty beat Money -Mart by a neck for second, with Princess Mafsilda, llappy Queen and Tripaway close up. Love in the Mist failed to jump out. with the field and toiled along in the rear nil the way. The winner is a well-grown three-year-okl who has a fine turn of speed and he will win in better company before long. Tripaway was slow to get going, but the style in which she finished was encouraging. Thorndale, Brightling, All Colours, Grey Lass and Tam Glen were scratched for the Moreton Hack Handicap. Gay Sonnet was a little better backed than Sir Roy in a field of seven. En Route was first to show out, but Violet 11. soon joined him in the lead. .Gay Sonnet, after giving trouble at the barrier, was slow to get. going, but at the end of two furlongs she .had run. through, and she raced round tlic turn beside Violet 11., with En Route and Ooch-v-----bondhu three lengths away, while Sir Roy was moving .up. On reaching the straight Violet TJ. retired. En Route then took charge and went on to wir. easily by two lengths from Sir Roy, who beat the tiring Gay Sonnet by three lengths, with Coch-y-boy dh u close up. The winner was making 'his first appearance after a spell and he looks a good prospect for autumn and winter mid he may do better over a longer

journey. Gay Sonnet was unlucky, as slie was unduly hurried after a slow start.’ and this left her without a finishing run. Violet 11. showed speed, but collapsed in disappointing fashion in the straight. The .Selma Trot. Handicap drew a field of fourteen, after Princess Thorpe, Sadie Huon and Bertha Bingen had been withdrawn. Yen was a. little better backed than Locanda's General and Eyonwood, with the penalised Amazon fourth choice. Locanda Maid led Miss Dorothy along the back, with Lyonwood, Drake and Locanda’s General at the head of the others. Miss Dorothy dropped out at the end of three furlongs, where Locanda Maid was showing the way to Drake, with Locanda’s General, Winter Audubon and Lyonwood not far away. On reaching the straight Lyonwood shot to the front and he won very easily by three lengths from Drake, who beat Locanda Maid by a neck, with Winter Audubon close up fourth. Locanda’s General fell in the straight, bringing down Amazon, Surfboard and Ashley Dillon. The horses and their drivers escaped without inbad’ly, but he showed a lot. of speed when he got going. The winner is a useful pacer over a short course, but not likely to get into good company The scratching of Economist left five runners for the Wakanui Handicap, the concluding event of the day. Finora was a pronounced favourite and her backers were never uneasy. She jumped out in front and though Goldtown tried to go with her, Finora soon drew out with a lead of several lengths, which she kept to the finish, winning easily. Goldtown led Corn Rigs all the way behind the leader. Grey Lass began slowly, but soon moved up and she was not far away at the finish. Red Wink drifted back to last and stayed there. He pulled up sound, but he showed no dash. Finora is a speedy galloper, hard to catch when she gets out in front. WAIRIO RACES. BALDOWA WINS CUP. (Special to the “Star.”) INVERCARGILL, January 13. The Wairio Jockey Club’s annual fixture was held in fine but very windy weather. The track was in excellent condition and very fast. There was a large attendance, the gate receipts showing an increase of over £4O. The racing was of a genuine character throughout, but the results were not at all in favour of backers. The tota.lisa.Lor investments yielded an increase of £461 compared with last season. For the Oliai Plate Rippling Lake was always a. better first fancy than French Belle, while there was fair support for Strathnaver. Taramoa made the early running and then Warseer and Rippling Lake led to the straight, with Strathnavar coming fast. In the run home Mr L. D. M a okay's Strathnaver, by Gay Lad—Olga Kolmar < W. Anderton) drew out to win by four lengths from Rippling Lake (N. C. Dwyer), with French Belle CJ. Andrews) three lengths off third and Swim Ashore fourth. The winner is trained by R. M’Kay at Riverton. He bad been running consistently for some time and well deserved his win. Taramoa, who is a half brother to Frenchman and a brother to Apache, displayed pace, but he is not ready yet. Homelight, from A. M’Lellan’s stable, was a strong first selection for th« Nightcaps Harness Trot, carrying about one hundred chances more than Lady Zita, with the locally owned Sunshade next, in order. Leading throughout., Mr J. 71. Reed's Sunshade, by Sungod t.l. Purdue, jun.). Avon by a length from Hornelight. by Four Chimes—Adonis mare (A. M’Lellan). Lady Zita (J. Shaw) was eight lengths off third, a head in front of Vitalis. Owned and trained in tlio district and carrying col*otirs made famous in the, south by Donside, the success of Sunshade was very popular. Homelight paced very greenly throughout, which cost him the race. There was strong speculation in the Wairio Cup, with Baldowa eventually carrying about sixty chances more than the coupled Geranial and Bilbo. Avhile Francaise was two hundred and sixty supporters off third selection. From a good start Cupidon showed out and then Francaise took up the running to the back, four lengths clear of Cupidon. At tlie far turn the field closed on the leader. At the home turn Francaise just headed Baldowa, with Bilbo, checked on the rails, next. In the straight Mrs R. B. Stiven's Baldowa, by Balboa—Redowa (F. Voiglit) headed the pacemaker to win by a length from Bilbo (N. C. Dwyer), who beat Francaise. (T. Metcalf), nearly a length away. Cupidon was a. bare length away fourth. Tiespite a strong wind at the back of the course the race was run. in good time, 2min 8 3-sfeec. A warm fa\ r ourite was found for the WoOdlaw Hack Handicap in King Balboa, carrying nearly two hundred and thirty chances more than the coupled Jack o’ Lantern and Glenham, with Soldier’s Hope about one hundred and twenty supporters off next. Fairy Ring led Soldier's Hope. King Balboa and Solzia to the straight. Taking command below the distance, Mr J. O. Hymers's Soldier's Hope, by Soldier's Chorus—Chrysalis (W. Anderton) won easily by two. lengths from King Balboa (P; ,T. M’Kay), with Solzia (1,. J. Ellis) a, length away third and Fairy Ring fourth. The winner, who is trained at Riverton by his owner, has been racing unluckily i>f late, and deserved his success. The track hardly suited the long striding King Balboa. Pamplona (who is suffering from a poisoned foot) and Windermere were withdrawn from the Aparima Steeplechase. Kilkee (F. Langford) was first selection, carrying about one hundred and sixty chances more than Scamp (Mr W. North), with Blazing Light about seventy supporters off third fancy. Scamp and Soldier's Dream made the early running, but tlie latter fell at the end of a round. Scamp was in front at the double, but blundered at the second obstacle and lost his rider. Over the last, mile Punjaub just showed the way from Blazing Light, Kilkee and Mettle Drift, in a bunch. Approaching the straight Blazing Light and Kilkee drew out. At. the last fence Blazing Light held a slight, lead, but Kilkee fell heavily. Drawing out. Mr W. M’Carthy's Blazing Light, by Gay Spark Kulnine mare (F. Langford) Avon by twelve lengths from Punjaub (L. Hunt). Mettle Drift (A. Youngman) was two lengths off third. Grand Fleet also finished. Kilkee. broke his back and died. The three riders who came to grief were uninjured. The winner is trained by his owner in the South Hillend district, where many .southern crosscountry winners have been turned out. Liberal (A. M’Lelian) was a 1 pronounced favourite for the Birchwood Saddle Trot, carrying over four hundred and thirty chances more than Revolt, with The Monkey nearly one hundred and eighty supporters off third selection. Revolt stood on the mark. , The Monkey led for seven furlongs. Then a bunch closed on him, including tlie backmarkers. Liberal and Hylas. Nearing the home turn Leith Chimes and Hylas single out. Drawing out in the straight, Mr F. D. M Leod's Hylas, by Sir Ha-tor —Kentucky mare ( .1. Stewaj-t) won by two lengths from Leith Chimes (.1. Langford) with Marvindale (L. Boivin) a length and a half off third and Silbon There Was heavy wagering on the Wa Iraki Handicap, a number of the starters being. confidently backed, but Spean Bridge was always most in demand, carrying about three hundred and seventy tickets more than Top Gear, with Sparkling Eyes about eighty supporters away third fancy. French Belie made the early pace, but. Spean Bridge and Top Gear were in front racing to an advantage turning for home. in n spirited tussle to the judge, Mr .\. Chisholm's Spean Bridge, l>y Richmor—Annie La urie (N. C. Dwyer) beat Top Gear (B. Brodie) by si short neck, with Takaka <F. Yoight.) a length off third, then French Belle and Sparkling Eyes. The winner is an imported 'mare who carries the same colours a.s Glentruin. She is trained at Invercargill by J. A. RowA plunge was made on Queen Balboa for the VVrey’S' Bush Handicap, tlie i concluding event. She went out carrying over fi\-e hundred and fifty chances more than Bugle Note, Avith Bloom over fifty supporters off next selection. Drawing inside place and getting out well, Soldier's Hope led throughout. Queen Balboa escaped from the bunch near the distance and made a great run. Soldier's Hope.’ by Soldier's Chorus—Chrysalis. by Silkworm (-•- Wilkins) beat Queen Balboa (F. J■ M’Kay) by threequarters of a length. Jsilfane (A. Voi'ght> was five lengths ofr third, followed by Andante and Bugle Note. The double success of the Riverton mentor, •F. (). Hynu-.rs, witli Soldier’s Hope was very popular. Under more fa von rnble circumstances Queen Balboa might have won, but Soldier s Hope handled the try-
