TYRE TO TRAVEL 200 MILES AN HOUR.
HITS GROUND THIRTY TIMES EVERY SECOND. By Telegraph.—Press Assn.—Copyright. Aus. and N.Z. Cable Association. (Received January 17, 12.40 p.m.) LONDON, January 16. In connection with the attempt to manufacture a motor-car tyre capable of travelling 200 miles an .hour, it is pointed out that at that speed any one point of the tyre hits the ground thirty times every second, thus generating heat which rubber has not 3-et withstood. Similarly every square inch of the tread experiences a force of four tons, tending to burst the tyre. Should a piece become detached it could fly through the air for half a mile. A recent trial necessitated a barricade to protect spectators. The tyre was subjected to the same strain as on a track and the experiment gave most successful results.
