Sir R. Heaton Rhodes and Lady Rhodes were passengers by the Wahine from Wellington on Saturday morning. Mrs F. Davidson is a guest at “The Lodge,” llanmer Springs. Miss Kathleen Irving is spending a short holiday at Hanmer Springs.

Mr and Mrs Henry Cotterill, Cashmere, will return to Christchurch this week from a holiday visit to Hanmer Springs.

Mr and Mrs L. A. Stringer (Mcrivale )have returned from a visit to Arthur’s Pass.

Dr and Mrs Arthur Thomson and family are returning to-morrow from the Picton Sounds.

Sir George and Lady Clifford are leaving to-morrow for a short visit to Wellington. Mr and Mrs C. G. Dalgety arc going to Wellington this week for the races. Miss Betty Cotterill (Cashmere Hills) is returning to Christchurch from Dunedin on Wednesday.

Miss Marion Macfarlane (Auckland;, who is arriving in Christchurch on Thursday to compete in the tennis tournament, will stay with Miss Cotterill. Mr and Mrs Davis-Hunt, of Fcndalton, have returned home after spending a holiday at “Ocean View Hotel,’' Governor’s Bay.

Mr and Mrs J. D. Buchanan, of Murray Place, accompanied by their two youngest children. Master Stanley and Miss Alison Buchanan, are spending a fortnight’s holiday with friends in Akaroa.

Mrs E. -Trewern, of Woolston, accompanied by Miss Mollie Trewern and Mrs T A. Firth, of Fendalton, have been visiting the West Coast. They were the guests of Mrs W. Joyce, of Greymouth, Mrs Toker, of Arahura and Mrs D. Wallace, Stillwater.

Mr and Mrs R. L. Woodhousc (Auckland) and Mr and Mrs Joseph Lee (Timaru) arrived in Christchurch yesterday and are staying at Warners Hotel.

A very enjoyable evening was spent recently when a surprise party visited the residence of Mrs M. Clark, 40, Cowlishaw Street, Avonside, in honour of her daughter Gwen’s birthday and engagement. The evening was spent in musical items, games and dancing. The music was supplied by Misses Betty Readhead and Elsie Wheatley, and Mr Arthur Hodgson.
