MR THEODORE TO FIGHT N.S.W. BY-ELECTION.
MAY SUPPLANT MR CHARLTON AS LEADER. By Telegraph.—Press Assn.—Copyright. aus. and X.Z. Cable Association. (Received January 15, 11.30 a.m.) SYDNEY, January 15. Mr Mahoney, Labour member of the House of Representatives has resigned owing to ill-health. Mr E. G. Theodore, ex-premier of Queensland has been’ selected by the Australian Labour Party to contest the by-election. It is anticipated that Mr Theodore will eventually replace Mr Charlton as leader of the Party. Great dissatisfaction has been created by Mr Charlton s attitude in the referendum proposals, which has resulted in the loss of much of his prestige as leader, and it is generally thought that the majority of the Party are only awaiting an opportunity to depose him from the leadership.
