“The fishing season, both at Deepwater Cove and Mangonui, bids fair to ellipse all previous records this year," said Mr B. Scannel, of Napier, who returned on Saturday from a three weeks’ stay at Deepwater Cove. “This is the first occasion on which swordfish have been landed before New Year, and some excellent sport is being enjoyed.” Mr Scannel has been an annual visitor at Deepwater Cove for some years, states the “New Zealand Herald.” This year he has been fishing in company with Captain J. Mawson, of the Union Company, and his son, Mr Broughton Scannel. All three have made catches of the big fish, Mr Scannel having caught the world's record hammerhead, weighing 3961 b, while his son caught a 1901 b mako. According to Mr Scannel, the camp at Deepwater Cove is looking better than ever, and is an ideal spot for a fishing base. The methods of the fishermen in trolling for kahawai and keeping them alive to use for bait are well Jcnown, but the Russell fishermen arc now using a new species of float. An ordinary balloon, covered with a handkerchief to stop it from bursting, is attached to the line in the same method as the kite introduced by Mr C. Alma Raker two seasons ago, and by its bobbing the fishermen can detect when they have a bite:
