SALVATION ARMY COMMISSIONER IS DELIGHTED WITH N.Z.
BOTH SPIRITUAL AND MATERIAL OUTLOOKS BRIGHT. Commissioner James Hay, commander of the Salvation Army in New- Zealand, who is at present visiting Christchurch, to-day gave his impressions of New Zealand, expressing pleasure with the country. “After four months in New Zealand,” said Commissioner Hay, “I can truly say that I am delighted. Both the material and spiritual outlooks of this country are very bright. I frequently contrast one country with another, but on the whole I am very pleased with New Zealand. “The work of the Salvation Army,” continued the Commissioner, ' has extended greatly during the last fifteen years. This is more noticeable in regard to children and rescue homes. This year we are making considerable extension, in all parts of New Zealand. We intend to erect 20 new halls, and are launching a ‘record year' campaign. By that I mean that we are going to appeal to irreligious people to pledge themselves to attend divine service on at least one day each week for a year and at the end of that time to give themselves a verdict on their impression:’. 1 tried this campaign in Australia with good effect. "Great strides are being made by the Salvation Army outposts in <Tuna,” he went on, “but the work there is very difficult, especially in Korea, where the natives have an abnormal sensitiveness and are easily irritated.
