SWIMMERS HOLD ANNUAL CARNIVAL.

GOOD SHOWING AT OPAWA CLUB BATHS. The Opawa Amateur Swimming Clubs annual carnival was held at the Opawa baths this afternoon in fine weather. Entries were good, and many of the finishes were close. There was a fair attendance of spectators. The programme, a lengthy one, included two Canterbury championships —soyds girls’ intermediate, and 440yds boys’ intermediate. Results were as follow: 50 YARDS GIRLS’ INTERMEDIATE CHAMPIONSHIP OF CANTERBURY. (Holder—Miss B. Cooke, United. Record 3 3 l-ssec—Miss A. Mather, 1923). B. Breward (United) .. 1 T.*3s P. Pithie (Opawa) .. 2 Miss E. Reed (Opawa) 3 The. only starters. Miss Breward led all the way and won by six yards. Miss Fithie gaining second j)lace by a touch. 440 YARDS BOYS’ INTERMEDIATE CHAMPIONSHIP OF CANTERBURY. (Holder —L. Fitch, Opawa. Record—6min 19 l-ssec, A. Stokes, 1925). L. Fitch (Opawa) 1 M. G. Smith (United) .... 2 E. MacConville (Somerfieid) also started. Fitch had gained a lead of yards in the first hundred, with MacConville second, two yards ahead of Smith. MacConville retired at 250 yards, when Fitch was over half a length ahead. With five lengths to go, Fitch was a clear length ahead of Smith, and finished a length and a third to the good.
