OUT OF BUSINESS FOR ONE MONTH.
TOO OFTEN DRUNK IN CHARGE OF A VEHICLE.
Charles Neilson, alias Nelson, received a shock this morning when Mr 11. F. Herbert, J.P., sentenced him to one month’s imprisonment for being drunk while in charge of a horse and cart. It was, however, his twelfth appearance on such charges, and the Bench had to take that into consideration. Sub-Inspector Mathew said that about 5.45 p.m. yesterday Neilson was in the vicinity of the Gladstone Hofei. He was drunk and had a horse and cart, and was taken to the police station and charged. The sum of 7s (id had been paid for looking after the horse and cart overnight. Mr Herbert said he did not think it was a case for a line. Accused had been before the Court several times before, and his penalties did not seem to have much effect. He would be sentenced to one month’s imprisonment. “Can’t I have a line?” asked Neilson, alias Nelson. “I’ve got a business of my own to look after, and there will be no one to look after it.” The plea went unheeded, and the man was remanded for a week on another charge—that of procuring liquor during the currency of a prohibition order. He was also ordered to pa}’ livery and bait fee.
