TENNIS CONTINUES AT UNITED CLUB.

THIRD DAY SEES SOME INTERESTING GAMES. Fine weather prevailed for the third day’s play in the United tennis tournament, though a gusty wind militated against fast play at times. The tourney was well advanced when play began yesterday morning, three finals having been reached and several semi-finals played. The final in the ladies’ handicap doubles was reached at noon, Misses K. and M. Scott proving the winners, and now few games have to be played. The following are the results:— LADIES’ SINGLES HANDICAP. Semi-final.—Miss Fleetwood (rec. 15) beat Miss Borrows (owe 15), 9-4. Final—Miss Fleetwood beat Miss Donaldson, 9-6. LADIES* DOUBLES HANDICAP. Second Round—Misses Hewlett and Fleetwood (owe 15) beat Misses MacIlree and Borrows (owe 15), 9-6. Semi-final—Misses Webb and Aitken (owe 15) beat Misses Hewlett and Fleetwood, 9-0. Final—Misses K. and M. Scott (owe 15) beat Misses Webb and Aitken (owe lo), 9-7. COMBINED DOUBLES, OPEN. Semi-finals—Goss and Miss Wake beat Jones and Miss Cooper, 6-1, 6-1; Borrows and Miss Borrows beat Ford and Miss Reed, 3-6, 6-0, 6-4. MEN’S SINGLES, OPEN. Semi-finals—Denton beat Row, 6-1, 6-3; Wood beat Borrows, 6-1, 6-8, 6-4. Final—Wood beat Denton, 6-2, 6-3. MEN’S DOUBLES, HANDIGA P. Semi-final—Goss and Borrows beat Jones and Skellerup, 9-4. TARANAKI CHAMPIONSHIPS Per Press Association. NEW PLYMOUTH, January 4. The Taranaki lawn tennis championships opened to-day in fine weather. The form displayed by a, number of players in the earlier games gave promise of strenuous contests later, the visiting New South Wales team particularly showing excellent form. So far none of the best players, including the Australians, has been beaten. AUCKLAND CHAMPIONSHIPS Per Press Association. AUCKLAND, January 4. The Auckland provincial lawri tennis championships, which were to have commenced yesterday morning, were again postponed to-day. no play having yet taken place in the tourney. Tf weather permits, a start will be made to-morrow morning. BARTLEET NOT PLAYING. Per Press Association. AUCKLAND, January 4. E. T.. Bartleet (Auckland) has notified the Dominion lawn tennis selectors that lie is not available for the test match against the New South Welshmen at Wellington on January 14 and 15. D. G. France (Wellington) will succeed to fourth position in tbe learn, Knott and Hturt (new doubles champions) playing fifth and sixth in the singles.
