IT PAYS TO RIDE WINNERS
(Special to the “ Star.”) AUCKLAND, January 5. TO sit on the hack of a horse and allow him to gallop along for two and a half minutes and receive £BO sounds like easy money. This is what L. CV. Morris got for riding Commendation to victory in the Great Northern Derby on Saturday. Sam Henderson’s winning fee for steering Tanadees in the Cup was £BO, and, in addition, he was laid £3OO to nothing by the owner. llis ride on Footfall in the A.R.C. Handicap brought £SO to B. 11. Morris, and T. W. Green, who sat on High Pitch in the Railway Handicap tor Imin IGsec and on Agrion in the noyai oiaivcs lur lmin 15 l-sscc, earned £OB. E. A. Keesing’s fee for winning the Foal Stakes on Gascony amounted to £4O, and a like sum was earned by Roy Reed in the Summer Cup on Rapine. The most successful rider at the meeting was Tommy Green, whose five winning rides earned him £llß.
