TEA AND SMOKING HARM THE NERVES.
DOCTOR BARES CAUSES OF NEURASTHENIA. . ? By Telegraph.—Press Assn. —Copyright Aus. and N.Z. Cable Association. (Received January 4, 1.50 pm.) LONDON, January 3. Discussing the causes of neurasthenia at the Education Conference, Dr Charles Thompson, medical officer for Deptford, declared that sudden cessation of work threw a severe, strain on the nervous sy’stem of people who retired at sixty or sixty-five. Frequently they became introspective and nervous. Driving motors caused strain and severe reaction. The telephone operator's occupation was a threatening one. Ilot climates exhausted the nervous system and intermarriage of relations caused delicate nerve inheritance, whilst excessive teadrinking and smoking were most harmful to susceptibles. > Medicine was valueless for the trouble, and treatment through the mind by suggestion was everything.
