The historic Livingstone Congregational Chapel in Stamford Rivers, Essex, has been clcstroyed. Mrs Kenniford, who was conducting a service, overturned an oil lamp as the service was starting, and the chapel was quickly a mass of flames. Mrs Kenniford escaped with difficulty. Dr Livingstone’s Bible was destroyed. This church was the one in which Dr Livingstone preached his first sermon. After mounting the pulpit he was seized • with nervousness and rushed out of the building.

£230,000 DAMAGE DONE IN MANCHESTER BY DISASTROUS FIRES.

LONDON', January 2. Disastrous fires occurred in Manchester during the week-end. The first was at the Winter Gardens cinema, where the damage amounted to £30,000. The second was in the well-known warehouse area of Cannon Street, doing damage to the extent of £200.000. Another fire was in Coventry. The outbreak was accompanied by a phenomenon arising out of fused electric wiring. Firemen were found to l>e continually receiving shocks as the current from the drenched walls passed to the firemen’s wet clothing.
