MANY PEOPLE ENJOY GALA AT WAIKUKU BEACH.

The YVaikuku Beach Domain presented an animated scene on New Year's Day, when the annual gala, organised by the Beach Improvement Association and postponed from Boxing Day on account of the weather, was held. Visitors were present, from all parts of the district, Christchurch motorists being strongly represented. The safe beach within easy distance of the well-sheltered domain proves more popular each year both for campers and picnic parties, and consequently there was a very laige attendance on Saturday, in spite of many neighbouring counter-attractions Those responsible for the arrange-, ments spared no effort to provide amusements for young and old. Side-shows 1 here were in plenty, but probably the most lucrative stall was that at which ice cream and soft drinks wore sold, the weather being conducive to good business in these lines. A short programme of sports was run off. and a baby show was also held. The Rangioia Brass Band was in attendance and played selections throughout the day At night a dance was held in the beach ball, and was very well patronised. Hunnibell’s jazz band provided the The gross receipts for the day were in the region of £350, about £7O of this sum representing gate money.
