The cost of maintaining the Lord Mayor's coach is so considerable that City dignitaries may be glad they arc no longer called upon to defray it. When the historic vehicle was built in 1757. it was paid for by a levy of £SO on every alderman who had not passed the chair, and it was decreed that every alderman subsequently elected should contribute £6O towards its nokeen.
