Westport on Saturday evening concluded a week of celebrations on the occasion of the diamond jubilee. On New Year’s Eve the residents of the town and .surrounding district hold a carnival on the main street under a beautiful canopy of electric lights. Some thirty cars conveyed old residents to Charleston, where photographs were taken of old Charlestonians, and an address was given by Mr P. J. O’Regan. In pleasant contrast to the wet, boisterous Christmas weather, holidaymakers were enabled to celebrate the advent of the New Year in sunshine. On New Year's Eve the weather was clear, but a light east wind kept the temperature down. On New A ear s Oav there was not a great deal of sunshine, but. the temperature was warm, and thousands of people were lured to the seaside resorts and the hills. Hundreds also went out on motor picnics which took them further abroad. Yesterday was the first really hot day for weeks, and hundreds of people, journeyed to Sumner and New Brighton to revel in the sunshine. The maxamum temperature, yesterday was 84.7, the highest recorded this summer. The previous highest temperature was 84.5.
