BIG SHOOTING HELD AT REDCLIFFS.

CANTERBURY RIFLEMEN CONTEST CHAMPIONSHIP. The fifth annual meeting of the Canterburv Rifie Association was held at the Redcliffs rifle range on New Year's Day. The weather conditions were excellent, with a. variable wind, which was inclined to be tricky at the longer ranges. The entry proved to be much augurs well for the future. The championship was very keenly contested Throughout, and resulted in a. tie between two local riflemen in J. Buschl and A r . Tims, both of the Railway Defence Rifle Club. Both men shot off at 600 yards range with five shots eacii -and Tims won by two points, the scores reading:—V. Tims 5,4, 3,4, 4. total 20; J. Buschl 5, 4. 2, 4. 3, total 18. The Tyro Championship also was a keenly fought, one, two competitors, in Rifleman 10. Truman, of Ashburton, and Rifleman S. H. Clark, of the Christchurch Defence Club, having to shoot off, the result placing Truman in front by four points, the scores being 20 and 16 respectively. The Fox Memorial Cup Aggregate was won by the youngest competitor at the meeting in H. Judkins, who no doubt owed his win to a splendid possible in the Service Match. Judkins, who is only eighteen years of age, had the honour of being in the first twenty-five of the “ King's Fifty ” at Trentham last March. He also received for Saturday’s effort a handsome medal presented by Mrs ISdwin Fox, of Rakaia. LieutenantvColonel F. B. Oresswell was in charge and was assisted by Captain M. A. Stedman, of the Southern Command Headquarters Staff. The statisticians were Mr A. C. Hallett and Mr W. ,T. Gabb. The secretarial duties were carried out by Mr R. H. Neill. SergeantMajor Vincent was in charge of telephones and Sergcant-Ma jox- W. Bates was trench officer. At the conclusion of the day's shooting Major J. P. Oakes, the president, presented the prizes won and congratulated the winners on their success and also those who had travelled from long distances to make the meeting a success.
