Dr and Mrs T. Mill, Knowles Street, have returned to Christchurch from a holiday visit in the south. Mrs A. T. Chapman and Miss Chapman. Knowles Street, are leaving tomorrow for .a short visit to Nelson. Miss Marjorie Reid, of Wellington, is the guest of Miss Doreen Kiver, at North Reach, Brighton. Mrs P. Pitcaithly, Lyttelton, is spending a holiday in Timaru. Mrs \Y. J. Grey, of Wellington, is staying at the United Service Hotel. Miss Jessie Mackav. Cashmere, is spending a holiday at Arthur's Pass. The Hon G. Fowlds and Mrs Fowlds arrived from the north on Friday morning. Mr and Mrs Ewart Rates are the guests of Mr and Mrs Harold Gardiner, Mrs IT. Jackson, of Berkley. Waimatc., is visiting her mother, Mrs J. Rogers, Jerrold Street, Spreydon. Mr and Mrs IT. Crust left by car yesterday for Dunedin, where they will spend a brief holiday. Mr and Mrs J. Curline motored back to Dunedin after a brief stay with their niece, Mrs C. Lawrence, Ferry Road. The engagement is announced of Miss Constance Massey, of Onetea, to Mr Charles J. Gasson, of Sydenham, Christchurch. Mr and Mrs S. Nelson, Timaru, are" at present staying with Mrs Nelson’s mother, Mrs Metcalf, Springfield Road, St Albans. Miss Mary Vidulich and Miss Jean Nvstram, of Lyttelton, are leaving today for an extended holiday in the south. Miss Rhoda Hensley and Miss Nancy Smith, both of Spreydon, are spending their holidays with Mr and Mrs Cullen, Beach Road, Akaroa. Mr and Mrs Reg. Smith, who were spending a holiday with relatives in Christchurch, have returned to the West Coast. Misses L. and C. Morton and Miss Phoebe J. Jones, Dunedin, are among the recent arrivals staying at Warner’s Hotel. Miss T. Bary and Mr and Mrs C. Sander, of Wellington, are among the recent arrivals staying at the United Service Hotel. Mr and Mrs S. S. Parry, of Wellington, and Mr and Mrs J. G. Noel, Dunedin, are guests at the Clarendon Hotel. The Misses Ophir and Alice Caven, “Royston,” Salisbury Street, left on Friday evening on a holiday visit to Auckland. The engagement is announced of Eva, second daughter of Mr and Mrs Milne, Beckenham, to James, only son of Mr and Mrs Clarke, of Christchurch. Mr and Mrs C. H. N. Clarkson, Misses Audrey and Valerie Clarkson, Kaiapoi, motored to Ivaritane on Saturday last, where they intend spending a few weeks’ holiday. Mr and Mrs H. E. Beardsley, of New Brighton, have returned from a tour of the West Coast accompanied by Mr and Mrs O. G. Bird, of Bell Ilill and Miss Bird of Wakefield. Mr and Mrs Archbold, Miss Mavis Archbold and Master Ron Archbold, Mrs Cox, Miss Marjorie Cox and Miss Olive Weakley (Opawa) are returning to-day from a holiday spent at the Waimakariri River. Mr and Mrs G. Higgins, Miss Shirley Higgins, Miss Griffiths, Mr and Mrs i<. Buchanan and three children, Misses Grear, Miss Seaton, Air and Mrs Parr, (Christchurch), Mr D. M’Millan (Wellington), Miss Crawford (Waimate), Mr and Mrs C. Willis, Miss E. Willis, Miss Sidev (Ilawarden), Mrs Wren (Dunedin), Miss Riley; Miss Horsley (Wanganui), and Mr Haagen Holenbergh (Sydney) are among the recent arrivals at the New Brighton Safe.
On Saturday evening, at the home of Mrs R. Ilaigh, Bracsburn, Opawa, a party was given in honour of the hostess’s brother, Mr David Swann, of Dunedin. Musical items were contributed by Mr Fred Perham, Mr Keith Watts, and dance music was supplied by Jack Tugshan’s orchestra. Among those present were; Mr and Mrs Robert Ilaigh, Mr and Mrs David Swann, Mr and Mrs Bernard Fanning and Mr and Mrs Keith Watts; Misses Masie Murphy, Myrtle Newton, Daisy Taplin, Beryl Fanning; Messrs Fred Pepham, Jack Ilughson, Douglas Wills and Frank Moss.
It was a happy idea of the Wembley Club to hold a dance on New Year s Eve at Dixieland, and the committee were untiring in their efforts to help in every way in making the evening a joyous one. The function was a brilliant success, and the outsanding feature was the spirit of good fellowship throughout the passing of the old j*ear, when all that could possibly do so formed a ring round the ball-room, joining hands and singing “Auld Lang Sync." Excellent music was supplied by Marston’s Band, and the usual “home-made supper” was greatly appreciated. Visitors to Reynox. Oxford, during the holidays included Mr and Mrs Deal, Mr and Mrs Reid (Feudalton). Mr and Mrs Harrison, Mr and Mrs Miles (Christchurch). A well attended meeting of the Home Economics Association was held at the Y.M.C.A. on Friday afternoon to discuss the question of joining with other women’s organisations in the reception and presentation to the Duchess of York. Miss Black more, who presided, read a letter from the Royal Visit Reception Committee, and it was agreed that the Home Economics Association should assist in any way possible. It was decided to call a meeting for the first Friday in February to make further and more detailed arrangements. Recent arrivals at the Hotel Federal include Mr A. W. Leach (Waimate), Mr and Mrs S. Robinson (Dunedin), Mr A. S. Merson (Napier), Mr J. Adams, Mr E. T. Watson (Invercargill), Mr A. Boyd, Mr J. Dawson. Miss K. Hannagan, Mr F. L. Buttle (Dunedin), Air and Mrs D. The Mistletoe Lodge No. 3, U.A.0.D., held their tenth children's Christinas party in the Ridgely Hall, when over 400 children and parents were present. The first portion of the programme comprised orchestral items by K. and L. Lethaby; clog dance, Miss Dulcie Timms; and a ventriloquist item with two dolls by Mr Scarff. Father Christmas then made his entry and dispensed toys and special prizes from a wellladen tree, lit up with coloured lamps, after which supper and sweets were dispensed. During the evening ArchDruid Brother P. F. M’Lay presented Mr and Mrs R. Sutherland, caretakers of the hall, with a leather travelling case, in recognition of their services rendered at various social functions of the lodge.
