Mr and Mrs Lynn M’Kelvie, Wellington. are staving at the United Service Hotel. Mr and Mrs Black and Miss Black (Dunedin) and Mr and Mrs Walter Ro«s (Dunedin) are at the Clarendon Hotel. A lire of qine branches helped to give the Home touch to the English girls of the party. The guests represented cities and towns all over the United Kingdom, including the North of Ireland, and the Isle of Man. Misses Thomas, Kelly and Liliey acted at hostesses. At the recent examinations of the New South Wales State Conservator - ium. an exceptional record was achieved' by Miss Merle Miller, of .Lyttelton. Although only a first-year student, she took first place with distinction in advanced pianoforte, second place with honours in advanced singing (third year grade), distinction in history of music, first and second year, honours in first'year’s harmony and honours in second year’s theory. Miss Miller studied pianoforte under Miss Winfred Hurston and singing under Mr Roland Foster. - . ' . Guests at the Hostel, Arthur's Pass include;—Mr G. W. Todd (Christchurch). Mr and Mrs J. P. Mitchell, Auckland, who were staying in Christchurch for a few days, have gone to Auckland. Mrs G. D. Dixon, who was making a brief stay in Christchurch, returned to Wellington last evening. Mrs W. J. Grey, of Wellington, arrived in Chrjstchurch ithis morning, and is registered at the United Service Hotel.

Alex Nathan. Pegrom, Tucker, N. G. Robinson and Cox (of Christchurch). The members of the Fifth Sumner Christchurch Company of the Girl Guides recently entertained Mrs E. Richards, of the Esplanade. Sumner. The District' Commissioner, who was present by special request, expressed her thanks for the work Mrs Richards had done, and presented her with one of the coveted Guides Badges, at the sj»me time stating that this honour was rarely conferred, there being only three others in the Dominion. Mrs Richards acknowledged the gift and expressed her admiration for the loyalty and activity of the members of the Sumner company. Seven Sumner members are leaving for the camp at Orari on Monday: Ideal weather is being experienced for the V.W.C.A. party at Otira. On Tuesday the whole party essayed to climb to the sumffiit of Mount Barren, with Mr Caldwell and his son a;» guides, reaching the top at noon, whereafter lunch and a rest, snowballing and snow-sliding were, enjoyed. Mount Barren is 5600 feet high, and a magnificent view was obtained of Arthur* Pass, and the mountains beyond, while to the west Mount Alexander showed up splendidly. The girls in the camp ing party are:—Misses Muxlow (2), Lament (3). Yeoman. Allen. Church (2), Pearce, ('lain. Holland. Thompson, Candy. Widdowson, Joyce (2), Anderson. Bowbyes, and R. Johnstone (hostess). The cam])' remains at the Holiday House over the New Year. The Sydenham Dance Assembly held their weekly dance on Tuesday last, when a large number danced to the music of Waterrens’s and Woods’s Bands. The second division of the beauty contest was won by Miss Ada Symes. The waltzing competition was won by Miss Pci low and Mr Lagan, the fox trot competition was wort by Miss P. Harris and Mr T. Ball, and another competition was won by Miss M. Baker anrl Mr F. Higgs. Another dance will be held on Tuesday next, when the same competitions will be held. The beauty contest will be continued for six nights.
