THE EVOLUTION OF THE CLOCK.
In this age of science one is apt to overlook the things which we regard as commonplace to-day, but which are in reality wonderful products of inventive genius. A case in point is the clock, the result of centuries of research and skill. A gradual evolution from sun-dial, hour glass and water-clock to tenth century clocks, operated by weights, and fourteenth century portable clocks, has brought us to the modern clock, usually operated by mainspring and pendulum. , Chiming clocks, comparatively .modern in origin, have hitherto been considered as belonging to the wealthy, but modern methods of construction have brought this most desirable form of clock within the reach of the moderate purse. Petersens, Ltd., Jewellers. 248, High .Street., Christchurch, have just, received a consignment of high-grade Westminster Chiming Clocks, of superior manufacture, in attractive Oak and Mahogany Cases, with the full chimes’ on eight chiming rods of beautifully mellow tone. These are moderate priced, an example of value being a fine Hanging Clock in Dark Oak, priced at £7 10s. During the Discount Sale the cash price of the clock mentioned is £6 7s 6d, a 15 per cent discount being given in all departments. This is an opportunity for Christmas Gift buyers, those buying now reaping the advantage of 3s in the pound. (4)
