TREATMENT OF V.D. NOT CHARGED FOR.

“ I agree that patients should have to pay, but we are taking drastic measures to stamp out the disease, and I can’t see how we are going to do it. otherwise than by giving free treatment,” said the chairman of the North Canterbury Hospital Board (Mr H. J. Otley) to-day when the question whether the board should charge for its treatment of cases of venereal disease was discussed. The report of the venereal diseases department of the hospital stated that the total attendances since last meeting had been 1139, representing 348 patients, of whom 39 were new. Of this total treated at the out-patients’ department 151 men and 91 won\en were suffering from syphilis and 684 and 196 from gonorrhoea. “ Treatment is costing tSc board a great deal of money,” said Mr F. Morrell. “ I think that patients should be charged for services rendered.” The chairman agreed, but said that such action would prevent the stamping out of the disease. “ But notification is compulsory ” urged Mr HorrelL “ Yes,” replied the chairman, “ but if we charged for treatment how many notifications would we get?” The board took no action in the matter.
