OPIUM SMOKERS CAUGHT IN RAID.
(Special to the “Star.”) WELLINGTON, November 24. Found in possession of opium in a form fit for smoking when their premises in Hainipg Street were raided last night, Ching Young Get, a gardener, and Ah Joe, a labourer, Appeared before Mr Page, S.M., to-day. The Collector of Customs, Mr Maclaurin, said that the police found a small quantity of opium. Ching had twice been fined in 11)22 for similar offences, the . penalties being £25 and £3O, Nothing previously had been known against Ah Joe. Mr Joll, for Ah Joe, said he was in poor health, was not an habitual smoker, and only had a small quantity for medicinal use. There was nothing to suggest that he was selling the drug. Mr Maclaurin said that both were of the waster class and one had the place barracaded like a stronghold. Get was fined £3o,’ in default two months’ imprisonment. % and Ah Joe £ls, in default one month's imprisonment.
