An application was made to the Arbitration Court at Auckland vestci day for an amendment of the chec c and butter factory employees’ award. The employers' representative contended that there was a defect in the clausirelating to holidays. Three weeks’ hoii day on full pay was favoured, with a seven-day week, but not where the* working week was six days. Me urged the deletion of the clause and the substitution of two clauses which had been in a previous award. Neither party had asked for the new clause. The employees’ representative suggested that the companies which had wanted the seven-day week now wanted six days, and at the same time to penalise the men to the extent of three weeks’ holiday on full pav. His Honor, in announcing that decision would be reserved, said if there was a bona fide mistake in the award it could be amended by consent of both parties. Repairs are being effected to the Parnassus Bridge by the Railway lie partment. and entail the closing of the bridge to motor traffic from •» p in. t<; 9 a.m. each day this w'eek except Wednesday. The running of the service cars will not be affected by the closing Trains are being .sent over the bridge without locomotives, but laden with goods. The subsidence of the rail wavline at Omoto, near Grcymouth, is still giving trouble, though passengers and goods are being carried as usual. it is intended to drive test piles in tinaffected area, and if these answer the. purpose, what will in effect be a bridge will be constructed.
