TENNIS RANKING MATCHES PLAYED.

IS ANGAS ANYWHERE NEAR RIGHT PLACING?

Tennis matches were the order of the day at the United courts yesterday, and although the courts were heavy there was some fast play.

G. Angas beat S. D. Denton, 6-3, 6-2, for twelfth place on the Canterbury ranking list. The score speaks for itself, and good judges are agreed that among the many anomalies of the ranking list, the position of Angas is outstanding, as he should be placed much higher in the list.

R. Browning, playing S. W. Field fo>* tenth place, won 3-6, 64. 6-1, showing better condition and hitting harder than his opponent. To-night T. W. Patterson and D. F. Glanville will play for third position. The Canterbury list with OlHvier and Seay off it, is not at present very formidable, but Seay is back in town, and will probably’ go back to first place. Dissatisfaction is expressed in some circles that Patterson, who has beaten B. B. Loughnan in successive years in the Canterbury championship final, should be placed three places below him. Glanville, too, has never yet been beaten in a match by Loughnan. United handicap matches are in full swing. Last night J. A. Johnston beat Hale in two sc*ts. The younger man, who is a greatly improved player, hit hard whenever liis handicap had given him a lead, but generally-speaking he drove too much to the centre line.

Sheppard and Mrs Sheppard, in the combined handicap, beat Walker and Miss Andrew. Sheppard, who is an excellent doubles player, was 'very troublesome at the net.
