SHEARING DELAYED BY RAINY WEATHER.
AUCKLAND OFFERING MAY NOT EQUAL LAST YEAR’S SALE. (Special to the “ S'tar.") AUCKLAND, November 10. Wool for the first Auckland sale of the season to be. held on Friday, November 20. is now coming to hand freely, although a number of outback clips have been held up through bad weather. Shearing operations also have been seriously hindered owing to frequent rains, and it is doubtful whether the offering at the forthcoming sale will bo equal to that of last November. Last year’s first catalogue comprised 16.156 bales, and. as in recent years, prices at the opening sale of the season have been better than those realised at subsequent sales. Growers show an increased tendency to market their clips as early as possible. The catalogue closes on November 20. In regard to market prospects experts, as usual are somewhat reticent, but the general opinion is that there should be a little change as compared with last, season. Mr 11. D. Robinson, chairman of the Wool brokers Association, stated yesterday that probably prices would be about equal to those realised at the second sale last, season. At the first sale last season the average price realised was £l6 14s 6d a bale. The second sale averaged £ls 7s 8d and the third £ls. The total bales sold last season amounted to 40.282, an increase of 2151 on the previous
The first sale of the season in New Zealand will be held in Wellington on Monday. Sales at Napier, and Wanganui follow before the Auckland fixture on November 26. Intermittent rain in the Waikato during the last six weeks has greatly interfered with shearing and in consequence the first sales of the season will be missed by many Waikato sheep farmers. One Raglan farmer has been waiting since the first week in October to complete shearing, but owing to unfavourable weather the work is not half finished. The cost of keeping the shearers until the weather improves is an expensive item to many farmers.
