Big Exhibition Opens At Addington To-morrow.

The Sixty-third Annual Show of the Canterbury A. and P. Association will be held at the Addington Show Grounds tomorrow and on Friday, and, given flue weather, the fixture should be a great success in every way. Good entries have been received, though the total is less than last year. This, however, was to be expected, as the Royal Show was held at Christchurch last year. Compared with 1921, the total entries this year show an increase of seventy-eight.

As is usual at the Christchurch Show, the sheep section this year is the best supported. Although the total sheep entries this year are thirty-one fewer than at the Royal Show, they arc larger than was the case for many years prior to last year- ' It is expected that the sheep will make a very fine showing.

The cattle entries are considerably fewer than last year, and they arc also less than two years ago. Perhaps the unsatisfactory' state of the dairying industry and the decrease in the raising of cattle for beef purposes has something to do with the decline.

Another sign of the times is afforded by the decrease in the horse entries, which are nearly a hundred less than in 1921. The decrease is most noticeable in the classes for draught horses and carriers’ horses. The growing popularity of the tractor for farm use ami the increase use of the motor for delivery work largely explain the falling olf in these two classes.

A gratifying feature is the increase in the number of pigs as compared with the Royal Show and the 1024 show. Pig breeding is an industry that could, with profit, be developed in Canterbury to a much greater extent than it is. Perhaps the better support given to the pig classes this year indicates that this development has started.

To-morrow will be judging day- at the Show, and it is really the best day to see the stock, as the crowd is not nearly so great as on Friday (People’s Day). To-morrow afternoon hunting, pony jumping and pony racing events will be decided. One of the main events in the show ring on Friday' will be the grand parade of prize stock at 1.30 p.m. This is always a most interesting display, and this year it promises to be of quite as high a standard as at any' shows in the past. There will also be bunting events in the ring on Friday afternoon.

Apart from the ring events and the general display of stock, numerous side-shows will cater for the entertainment of the large crowds. The side-shows this year are expected to be quite as interesting and well varied as in the past. On Friday night a carnival will be held at the Show Grounds, and a thoroughly entertaining evening is promised.
