THE OLD SHAKO.

To the Editor. Sir,—A letter in Monday’s “Star.'' signed “Helmet,'' amused me. "Helmet 1 does not like the shako: perhaps a red coat would suit him. He says a lot of good men are leaving the Police Force owing to the regulations, etc., and he does not like the new Commissioner, so I would like “Helmet” to know that I have made a close studv of some members of the Canterbury Police Force for a number Of years, and I am satisfied that since the present Commissioner has been in office there has been a marked improvement in their conduct. Ido not wish to decry the Police Force as a whole, but there are a few who should have been out of the Police Force years ago, and I am satisfied this present Commissioner will square them up. There is one thing that should be done to assist the Commissioner, and that is to do away with the Police Force Appeal Board, which is only hampering him in his work.— SHAKO.
