EVIDENCE WEAK, COMMENTS JUDGE.
CRIMINAL SESSIONS AT PALMERSTON N. Per Press Association. PALMERSTON N, Nov. 9 The quarterly sittins of the Supreme Court opened this morning Addressing the Grand Jury, Mr Justice Reed stated that there was rather more than the usual number of criminal cases for trial, but none of any great importance. With regard to the .charge against an organist, Hubert Gurney, of alleged theft of Borough Council funds, his Honour stated that the evidence .hardly warranted sending the man forward for trial. However, that was for the Grand Jurv to decide. "It is an extraordinary state of affairs," remarked his Honour. in traversing briefly the main facts of the rase. “I can't understand it. There is nothing to connect the charge with the man, only the fact that he was inside the counter. It is extremely weak.” Dealing with another charge of alleg ed theft, not a serious one, his Honour said he could not understand why the case was not dealt with by justices, and why the higher Court was troubled with it.
