DIRTY LINEN WASHING AVOIDED.

CHIEF JUSTICE’S LOGIC ACKNOWLEDGED IN COURT. (Special to the “Star.") WELLINGTON. November G. The possibility of ditty linen being washed in the Supreme Court was averted yesterday as the result of the Chief Justice Advising the parties in a case in which Robert Johnston, a chemist, petitioned for a judicial separation from his wife on the grounds of cruelty. Chief Justice Skerrett said it appeared as though it were impossible for the parties to live comfortably together, In the circumstances it was perfectly clear that it would be to the advantage of both to avoid not only the unpleasantness of publicity but also the expense involved if the case were continued. It seemed clear that the husband must make reasonable provision for his wife. “ It seems to me to be wrong to proceed with the discussion of matters that can do neither party any good, and mAy do them future harm,” said his Honor. He suggested that counsel should endeavour to arrive at some solution on reasonable lines. Mr Mazengarb. said that he would not push the matter to the Court if that could be avoided. Counsel admitted the logic of his Honor’s observations and pointed out that whether or not the petition succeeded the result must be the same—the separation of the parties. His Honor said it would be wrong to go to all sorts of domestic friction for the purpose of settling the question of alimony. The case was adjourned sine die.
