SUBSIDENCE OCCURS NEAR GREYMOUTH.

MORE TROUBLES FOR PASSENGERS FROM COAST. West Coasters coming to Christchurch for the races to-day were faced with more difficulties as a result of a subsidence in the railway line at Omoto, a few miles outside Greymouth which occurred during the night. The line was found to have dropped several feet and it was impossible to get it repaired in time to enable the special train from Greymouth to get through. Undaunted, however, about 165 persons travelled to Otira by motor, where the onlv two passenger carriages there were made into a train This train brought the West Coasters on to the big break at Cora Lynn where a change had to*be made to another train. The train was expected to reach Christchurch two or three hours late, but in time for the visitors to see the Cup run. A big wash-out has occurred at the Waiau-upa combined railway and traffic bridge near Parnassus, causing two spans to collapse and the bridge to sink a depth of four feet. The bridge is unsafe for vehicular traffic, but the Railway Department has arranged to run the train up to the bridge and transfer the passengers to another train on the other side. The washout in the railway line at Rotherham was reported to be all clear at 11 o’clock this morning, and railway traffic to Waiau has been resumed.
