ENRAGED CHINESE CHASE FELLOW WITH KNIFE, HOE.
MARKET GARDENERS FINED IN AUCKLAND. Per Press Association AUCKLAND, November 6. An exciting incident at Avondale on September 20 resulted in the appearance in the Police Court yesterday of King Hong Jong and Soo Bing Poy on a charge of assaulting Ah Nor. Ah Nor. a hawker, said he accompanied a Chinese woman to the market garden at Avondale as she wished to secure some effects. He did not know* her name. Sergeant Caldwell: But he said he was going to marry her. The interpreter said that witness reiterated that he intended to marry the woman, but did not know her name. Ah Nor said he waited while the woman entered a house. Jong appeared with a hoe and looked threatening. He was joined by Poy, who had a knife, and witness fled. Jong struck him with the hoe and the pursuit continued until witness jumped on a lorry. Li How Pee said she was leaving the house when she saw defendants attack Ah Nor, who had been waiting for her. A motor driver said he was driving a lorry when Ah Nor hailed him excitedly. Nearly a dozen Chinamen were following him, with defendants in the lead. Ah Nor took refuge on the lorry, but had to retreat on to the canopy roof to keep out of reach of his assailants. “The knife was uncomfortably close so I gave way and let them have the truck,” said witness. Counsel said defendants had mistaken Ah Nor’s purpose in visiting the premises. Jong had called out the equivalent of “stop thief” and Ah Nor took to his heels. Jong was convicted and fined £2. A fine of £1 was imposed on Poy.
