Jong struck him with the hoe and the pursuit continued until witness jumped on a lorry. Li How Pee said she was leaving the house when she saw defendants attack Ah Nor, who had been waiting for her. A motor driver said he was driving a lorry when Ah Nor hailed him excitedly. Nearly a dozen Chinamen were following him, with defendants in the lead. Ah Nor took refuge on the lorry, but had to retreat on to the canopy roof to keep out of reach of his assailants. “The knife was uncomfortably close so I gave way and let them have the truck,” said witness. Counsel said defendants had mistaken Ah Nor’s purpose in visiting the premises. Jong had called out the equivalent of “stop thief” and Ah Nor took to his heels. Jong was convicted and fined £2.
