Shirley-St. Albans Notes.

SHIRLEY SCHOOL COMMITTEE. At the monthly meeting of the Shirley School Committee there were present: Messrs. Thompson (chairman), Hunt, Salt, Finney, Burson, Clothier, Anderson and Mrs M’Kay. Notice was i received from the Education Board I that Thursday, November 11, would be a holiday. it was decided that the school should close' on Friday, Noveriilier 12 also. With, reference to the picnic it was decided to submit the names of four places to the-parents of scholars and let the majority rule. The Visiting. Committee appointed for the month were Messrs. Stanley and Anderson. The head master’s report, stated that the average attendance-for the month-was 598, aiid the roll number 666. ST ALBANS BURGESSES' ASSOCIATION. The monthly meeting of the association was held last Tuesday. Mr A. C. Wilson: presided. Mr R. B. Dailey lectured on the loan proposal of the Waimak. River Trust. A vote of thanks was passed to the lecturer for his address. The deputation which waited on the Tramway Board in connection with complaints regarding the unloading of passengers in Barbadoes Street, made their report, and stated that the deputation received a favourable hearing. Complaints were made with reference to the overcrowded state of the buses on the Springfield Road routes. The secretary was instructed to write to the Tramway Board asking for extra buses for the picture and theatre trips. It was decided to write to the council for a public convenience to be placed at the vicinity of Colombo Street north. The secretary of the Public Playground Committee reported that a letter had been received from the council stating that £SO of the council’s subsidy had been granted, the balance to be forwarded after the close of the present financial year of the. council. The secretary,' Mr Hillsdon, who had resigned, agreed to continue office for the remainder of the. year. ST ALBANS DISTRICT SCHOOL FAIR. Last Friday and Saturday the school was the scene of much activity, when the fair to raise funds for necessary school improvements was held. Mr 11. Holland, M.P., opened the fair on the Friday evening. The Minister of Health had assured him, he said, of St Albans School receiving a dental, clinic in the near ..future.; A statement of re-

cepits, and payments is to be placed before a meeting of householders during the coming- week. The net financial result lias not been assessed yet, but well over £IOO is in hand. DOLL COMPETITION. Great interest was taken by the pupils of Standards V. and VI: in the doll dressing competition, and very good results were shown. The judges, Mesdames Thwaites, Lister and Brewer, had great difficulty in deciding the various prizes, the work being so uniform in its excellence. The following were the prize winners: Joan Palmer, Mabel Spring. Betty Tapper, Beatrice Spring, Rona Pine, Vera Barrell, Dorothy Studholme. LOYAL BENEVOLENT LODGE, M.U.. 1.0.0. F. Hillsdon.re ported that the remit lor the district conference dealing with female members joining male lodges, was endorsed by the district'executive at its last meeting. The question of entertaining the children of the members at a Christmas entertainment was discussed and it was decided that all members be circularised. The • organisers of the pantomime, “Red Riding Hood,” which was run by the Edgeware juveniles, on behalf of their Queen was staged in the Caledonian Hall’for the benefit of the Bryndwr Methodist Church. During the internal the Rev. L. B. Neale, of St Albans, thanked the performers. Bouquets of flowers were , presented to Mrs C. Burson, Miss Daisy Raplcy and Mrs Gordon Williams. ST STEPHEN’S CHURCH. . The bazaar held last Saturday in the schoolroom for the benefit of the church funds was a pronounced success despite the counter-attractions of the laying of the foundation stone of St George’s Hospital and the opening of the boating season. The statement of receipts and expenditure which .has been circulated shows receipts £109 ; expenditure £ll. The following were the stallholders:—lees, Mesdames Hancock and Booker; sweets, Mesdames Moses and Gear}*: produce, Messrs Morgan, Cox and Stephens, Miss Morgan and Mrs McKay: tea tent., Mrs Rimnier and Misses No vis, Cox. Welsh, and Atkinso„n; side, shows, Messrs Hunt, Burson, McGuigan and Thomas; plants, Messrs Parnell and Court and Mrs Smith; guild, Mesdames Edwards, ’ Gillies, Friberg arid Court; 1000 pocket ’ ladies, Mesdames Rundle and Stewart.

BIRTHDAY PARTY. A very large gathering of • relations and friends assembled at the Winton Street hall, St Albans, on Saturday evening, the ion being the coming of age of Sciderick,, second son of Mr and Mrs G. Cook, of Barbado'es- Street. The hall was tastefully decorated with many coloured streamers, and an exceptionally enjoyable programme of games, musical items and dances provided the evenings’s entertainment. Heatly’s orchestra provided the music. Mr G. Cook presented'the time-honour-ed key and Mr S. Cook suitably responded. Songs were sung by Miss Auriseh. recitations by. Mr . Cam. Brown, Mr Gunn, and .Mr S. Cook. Mr J. .T, Stevens, acted as M.C. Mr S. Cook, who is leaving on transfer to Petone, was the recipient of many presents. The evening was brought, to a close with a good-night waltz and the singing of "Auld Lang Syne.” Among those present, were:—Mr and Mrs-A. Burrowes, Mr and Mrs G. Cook. Mr and Mrs T.
