GISBORNE TRAMS MADE LOSS FOR YEARS.

COMMISSION REPORTS ON SUSPENSION ORDER. (Special to the "Star.”) Gisborne, October 30. The report of the commission of ex-, perts appointed by the Minister of Public Works to go into the question of whether the Governor-General should grant an order enabling the Gisborne trams to be scrapped, shows that the trams have been making a big loss for years, and that with renewals required in the immediate future the annua! working loss would be £267(). to which would have to be added £2942 required for interest and sinking fund. Whether the trams are scrapped or not the commission finds that the track and plant could not be maintained at a satisfactory rate of efficiency, owing to lack of funds, and for the past three years the loss on the working expenses amounted to £IBOO. The report comments strongly on the absence of a renewal fund. The commission considers the engineer's estimate of £25,000 for renewal of the Gladstone Road track reasonable, but that it would be sufficient if a mile o( the track were renewed in the meantime. The commissioners recommend that consent be given to the application for an order to suspend the service.
