Miss Cowlishaw and Miss Mary CowliShaw, Knowles Street, have returned from Wellington, where they took part in the Heretaunga golf tournament. Mr and Mrs M. 11. Godby have returned from Wellington, and have gone to Winchester for the Waihi School Sports. Mr and Mrs G. E. Mannering. Fendalton, left to-day to stay with Mrs Alister Mackenzie at Fairlie. Mr and Mrs Bede Loughnan, Christ church, are visiting Timaru. Mrs G. E. Walker, Woolston, just returned by the Mahcno after a five months’ visit to relatives and friends in Melbourne and Sydney. Miss E. Digney, one of the finalists in the Canterbury beauty competition, will be married in St Paul’s Presbyterian Church, on November 4, at 3 p.m. Mr and Mrs T. C. Robinson and Miss Robinson arrived from Mt. Palm yesterday and arc staying at Warner’s Hotel. Mr and Mrs Herbert Acton Adams, of lopapa, arc guests at Warner's Hotel. The coming of age of Mr Harold Hooker, son of Mr W. Hooker, 56, Bealey Street, was celebrated recently, when about thirty-five of his friends gathered to spend the evening. An ' enjoyable time was spent in musical items, competitions and games. Mr Hooker was the recipient of many ! gifts, and during supper was presented with a latch-key by Mr E. Morton, accompanied by the good wishes of those present. On Thursday a successful sale of work was held in the Sunday school room, under the auspices of the Ladies’ Guild of the St John’s Church. The , stall* were neatly arranged in the i schoolroom and were plentifully sup- ; plied with goods. There was a good ! attendance. The work stall, in charge i of Miss M. Barker, assisted by Mesdames J. A. Paterson and C. Wilks, was well filled with articles made by the members of the guild; the cake stall was in charge of Mrs W. J. Moore;, Mrs J. C. South did well at the jumble ‘ stall; the sweet stall was in charge of Miss W. Pearce, assisted by Misses South (2) and Blathwayt; the afternoon tea was in charge of Mrs T. H. Langford, assisted by Mesdames L. FI. Orbell, P. Surridge and Miss Louden, j Mrs A. L. Barker (president) and Mrs J. Foxon (secretary) were busy supervising details. In the evening a concert was held. The performance was composed of musical items, songs and monologues. Misses E. Levens and W. Pearce opened with a pianoforte and violin overture. Songs were sung by Mesdames C. Harrison, W. Norman, J. V. Foron, Miss Gladys South, Messrs F. Spurdon, C. Harrison and F. W. Salmon, and the accompaniments were played bj' Mrs F. W. Salmon, Misses M. Opie and M. Spurdon. Mr L. 11. Orbell announced that the takings were £36 15s 4d. The winners of the various competitions were:—Gross takings, Mrs J. A. Paterson; tray cloth. Mrs D. Gill; cushion, Mrs W. R. Pearce; naming doll, Mrs T. H. Langford; box of chocolates, Mrs J. 11. Anderson. The Canterbury Jockey Club will hold a race ball on Thursday, November It (Carnival Week), in the Caledonian Hall. Tickets may be obtained from the secretary or any member of the executive committee, who are as follows:—Mesdames Richard Allen, J F. Buchanan and G. G. Aitken, Misses. Joan Fulton and Phyllis Boyle, Messrs Richard Allen. L. E. Cooke. L. D. Cotterill, D. Gould, 11. G. Helmore and D. E. Wanklyn. The anmial break-up dance of the Gaiety Community Club will be held in the JellicOe Hall on Monday night. Manning's Orchestra will supply the music, and there will be the usual carnival attractions and dance novelties. All members and friends are invited. A special dance will be held tonight at the Caledonian Hall bv the Christchurch Dance Assembly. During the evening a ladies’ foxtrot contest and a men's waltzing competition will be held. Prizes will be awarded for the various competition dances, including the Lucky Spot waltz. The Sisters and staff of St Margaret’s College have issued invitations for the school sports on Christ's College pricket grounds, Hagley Park, on Wednesday, November 3, at 2 p.m. The Colombo Street Baptist Church was recently the scene of a pretty wedding, when Alice, eldest daughter of Mr and Mrs 11. M’Caw, of Sydenham. was married to Gordon, only son of Mr and Mrs B. Sloane, of Waltham. The Rev J. K. Archer officiated, and Mr Wilson presided at the organ. The church was prettily decorated with pink and white blooms by friends of the bride. The bride, who entered the church oh the arm of her father, wore a becoming frock of ivory brocaded crepe de chine. Her hand embroidered veil was arranged with clusters of orange-blossom pink and white mingled in her bouquet. Miss Winnie M’Caw attended her sister as bridesmaid, wearing a dainty mauve silk crepe frock with a tulle scarf to match, her black crinoline hat was finished with mauve streamers, and she carried a pink and mauve bouquet. Mr Roy Brightmore attended as best man. The reception was held at the Dorothy tea-rooms. The bride’s mother received the guests wearing a smart navy marocain frock and a hat to match. Her posy was of scarlet anemones. The brjde’s goingaway dress was of navy repp relieved with oriental trimmings. With it she wore a smart bois de rose georgette hat.

A SPANISH CABARET. On Monday, November N, at 9 p.m ) Captain and the Hon Mrs Tabu Rhodes will present a Spanish cabaret in aid of St George's Hospital, Ihe Roman Catholic orphanages and St Saviour's Home. The cabaret this year will be on a considerably larger scale than its predecessors, which have proved such unbounded successes. The entire company comprises about fifty members, including pupils of Miss Madeline Vyner, Miss .Irene Mulvany-Gray and Miss Iris Montgomery, together with members of the “ Touch and Go ” Company. Dancing will take place throughout the evening, and, until about 11.30 p.m.. will alternate with cabaret numbers by the company. The box plan will open at The Bristol on Wednesday. November 3. at 9 a.in.
