WEST SPREYDON SCHOOL COMMITTEE. The West Spreydon School Committec held another successful euchre and dance last Saturday. There was a good attendance c»£ players and dancers. The following were the winners of the euchre prizes:—Men, Mr Sloane 1, Mr C. Broughton 2: ladies, Mrs Harrison 1. Mrs Jacobsen 2: consolation prizes, Mrs Forsyth and Mr Gibbs. , QUEEN CA R NIV AL. The positions of the Queens in the Spreydon Park Carnival were altered this week. Miss Hazel ( lark (Tennis Queen) being on top, Miss Olga Robinson ) Bowlers’ Queen) second, and Miss Enid Ealham (Children’s and Croquet Queen) third. The bowlers’ section held a successful euchre party last Tuesday in aid of their Queen. Mrs Truman and Mr M’Gimpsev, Mrs M E wen and Mr W. Campbell won prizes. j BARRINGTON BOWLING C LUB. The Barrington Bowling Club, which opened its season last Saturday, is fortunate in possessing what is consider-

ed the best green in Canterbury. This is due in a large measure to Mr J. Young, who superintended the layingdown on the green. On the opening day. although the green was pulling i somewhat, after the rolling on Mon day night every ball ran true. Much credit is due to the working bee. ■which under the able guidance of Mr T. M’Gimpsey, put in a week of hard work, cleaning, cutting and rolling prior to handing over to the green-keeper, who has now commenced his duties. The children’s section of the Sprevdon Park Queen Carnival held their final euchre evening in the old Council C hambers last Wednesday evening. Prizes were awarded as follow: Ladies, Mrs Forsyth 1. Mrs M L aren 2. Mrs Con si dine consolation; men. Mr Thompson 1, Mr Halls 2, Mr M Larcn consolat’on - The lucky number went to Mrs i lark, while Mr Halls won the aggregate. After presenting the prizes, Mr Ealham, chairman of the. committee announced that the Addington Rugby League Football < lub were giving a benefit euchre and dance to the Section on Tuesday, November 2. TENNIS AND CROQUET CLUBS. Last Saturday was a red-letter day as far as Spreydon was concerned, the occasion being the opening cf the Barrington Tennis, Bowling and Croquet Club whose headquarters are located m the Spreydon Park. There was a large attendance of visitors and players. the opening ceremony being carried out by the Mavor who, in the course of his remarks,'wished the clubs every success. Much credit is due to the committees of the three clubs who worked hard to have the greens in good order for the official opening. VALEDICTORY. Mr Geo. Wear, recently retired chairman of Addington School, was entertained b\- the members of the committee, and members of the teaching staff, when a very pleasant evening was I spent. Musical items were contributed I by Mrs J. G. Taylor, Misses Bow- » den. Haberfeld, Baker, Stephens and I Wade, and Miss Petrie. Mr Chas Fisk (chairman), Mr J. S. Barnett, Mr W. ‘ Coote spoke of the excellent work done by Mr G. Wear and Mrs Wear. Mr R. B. Clarke congratulated Mr and Mrs Wear on their successful efforts tor the school, and asked them to accept. a handsome eiderdow n as a token o.t' esteem from the Addington School Committee and teaching ‘ staff. Mr M ear suitably replied, and expressed their sincere regrets at parting from Addington, pupils, teachers, and committee, with whom he had spent over six pleasant years. The Spreydon Baptist Church was well filled on Thursday afternoon, the occasion being the wedding of the minister’s (Rev E. E. Smith) second daughter. Elsie Kathleen, to George Eric M’Kessar, eldest son of Mr and Mrs

J. M’Kessar, of Huntsbury Hill, St Martins. The bride wore a simple frock of white brocaded crepe de chine, and her mother’s wedding veil. The bridesmaid, Miss Winnie Smith, wore apricot crepe de chine and a wreath of filigree leaves, and carried a bouquet to tone. The bride’s father officiated, and Miss Dudney presided at the organ. The church was beautifully decorated with Japanese maples and arum lilies. A reception was afterwards held at Thompson's tea rooms, and the happv pair left later by motor, the bride wearing a saxe-blue repp dress, faced with fawn, a fawn overcoat, and hat of fawn georgette daintily trimmed with saxe-blue flowers. DI AMON I) 7UBIL E E CELEBRATIONS. At the Spreydon Baptist Church the diamond jubliee services were held on Sunday last. The preachers were Rev J. D. Webster, Rev Gardner Miller and Rev E. E. Smith Large numbers gathered at each service. The musical portion was of a high order and was under the baton of Mr D. Petrie. Mrs Marston presided at the organ. The celebrations was continued on Tuesday night, when the church building was filled. The Rev K. E. Smith took the -chair and the representative speakers were the Mayor (Baptist denomination and city), Rev C. Oldham (Anglican Church). Mr Nairn (Presbyterian), Mr Doig (church secretary), Mrs Petrie (Sunday school and church), Messrs T. Marriner, C. Dixon, D. Sykes, F. Dudney. A number of Baptist ministers were present, including Rev C. W. Duncumb, of Timaru, Rev J. Carlisle, of Opawa. Rev C. Mathews, of Ashburton. Rev \\ . 11. A. \ iekery, of Kaiapoi, and Rev L. C. IT. Barbour, of Hawera. Apologies were received from Rev -A. { W. Stuart, of Linwood, and Rev A. I Cole, of St Albans. Rev Liversedge represented the Methodists. The choir rendered two anthems, and three former choir masters, Messrs Field, Pole and Petrie, sang a trio. Miss Dudney was the soloist. The chairman, on behalf of the officers and members thanked all helpers, including Mrs W. Sykes, the architect of the new school building. Messrs J. Hammett and Sons (the contractors) and Mr E. Ilatherlev (sub-contractor). Greetings were received from all over the Dominion, including one from Rev M. W. P. Lasses, secretary of the Baptist Union. A tribute of love and esteem was placed on record of the life work in connection with the church and Sundav school of Mr Gilbert Dixon, who is laid j aside through sickness. At ten o’clock I 1 an adjournment was made to the new > school premises, when Mrs D. Petrie, with a few well-chosen words, unlocked the door and declared the building ) open to the glory of God. Supper was I j served to about 300 people, and the j I remainder of the evening was spent in ' social intercourse. During the supper J hour a pleasant surprise was sprung on l | the pastor of the church (Rev E. E. \ [Smith), when Mrs Petrie, on behalf of the congregation, presented him with ' a. beautifully-bound Scofield reference Bible. LOYAL ADDINGTON LODGE. The regular meeting of the Loyal Addington Lodge, M.U., 1.0.0. F., was held in the lodge room. Dickens Street, on Monday. The N.G. Brother R. W. Flintoff, presided over a good attendance of brothers. Brother T. Candv, P.G., reported having visited sick brethren] and was thanked. Sick pay amount-

A long discussion took place over the letter received from the North Canterbury district regarding honorary members, and the following motion was eventually Carried: “That the following words be added to rule 2., after the word “belong’: 'Provided they are contributing to the funeral funds of their respectivesociety or branch, this amendment not to apply to those members affiliated prior to date of registration of amendment.’ ” The N.G. and Elective Secretary reported progress of lodge’s 41th anniversary celebrations, to be held in the Oddfellows’ Chambers on Saturday evening, October 30. A motion of sympathy was passed to the widow and family of the late Brother 11. M'Leod. BOWLING. On Saturda}q October 23, under very favourable weather conditions, a commencement was made with the first round of the pennant competitions, when Sunny side beat Imperial, on the latter's green, by three games ro nil. During the afternoon refreshments were dispensed by Mesdames Bowden. Clark. Fraser and Ilewson. This green is vastly improved, having been levelled and top-dressed in the autumn by Mr Browning, the recently-appointed greenkeeper, and members this year are looking forward to some splendid games in their own competitions, as well as lin the pennant matches. EUCHRE. The usual weekly euchre was again held by the Addington Burgesses’ Association last Saturday evening. The following are the prize-winners: Mrs Sheridan, Mrs Chapman, Mrs Collett and Mrs Wilson, Mr M’Gregor, Mr Purlane, Mr Smith and Mr Aiming. I ADDINGTON FOOTBALL CLUB. Addington Rugby League Football Club held their weekly euchre and dance in the Oddfellows* Hall, Selwyn Street, last Tuesday evening. The following were the prize-winners: Ladies, Mrs Philpott, Miss Fitzsimmons, Mrs E. Cooke, Mrs Cooke. .Mrs Jackson, Mrs Ilartigan, Mrs Shaw; gents. Mr Needs, Mr Shaw, Mrs French. Mr Ilartigan, Mr Stanton. Mr M’A 1 lister. Novel tv dance winners: Miss Withers and Mr Ambrose, Miss Fitzsimmons and Mr Ilartigan. Miss M’Clure and Mr Stacey.
