CHRONICLES OF THE WEEK

•ALL SAINTS JUBILEE. The celebrations in connection with the Jubilee of All Saints Church commence to-morrow, when the <S a.to. communion service will be held, followed by the 11 o’clock, (preacher, the Rev. Canon J. de B. Galwey), and the 7 p.m. (preacher, Rev. S. Parr). On Monday. All Saints’ Day, and Jubilee Day, there will be Holy Communion at 10 a.m., and the Thanksgiving service will be at 6.30 p.m., at which some of those present 50 years ago, will be present, including three of the original Sunday-school teachers. The first lesson will be read by the Rev. F. G. Brittan, who was present at the first service, and the second lesson by Rev. H. Leach, a former Mr R. Barker, organist of St Paul’s Cathedral, Wellington, who played the organ at the Consecration Service, also hopes to be present. At the Jubilee supper, for which final arrangements have been completed, there is to be a three-tier cake, lighted by 50 candles. OPENING OF YACHTING. Brilliant weather prevailed for the opening.of the Power Boat and Sailing Club’s new season at Redcliffs, and the estuary with it.-; white winged fleet looked at its best. After the official party had made an inspection of the channel, the president, Mr 11. S. Hobday, congratulated the club on winning the Sanders Cup, and declared the season open. Congratulations were also offered by Mr J. McCombs, M.P.. Mr 11. Holland, M.P., and;Mr R. B. Owen. Commodore A. T. Round, in a short speech, stressed the necessity of encouraging the younger generation in a love of the sea, and broke out the New Zealand ensign while the Sumner Marine Band played the National Anthem. Jn the racing which followed Takapuna won the combined yacht race, and Rajah, the power boat race. A very fine exhibition of speed was given by the motor boat “Miss Canterbury.” GAS SUPPLY. The. Borough Council has been advised that the contractor for the new retorts is making good progress. Whiie the alterations? are at present slightly affecting the gas supply it is expected that in the course of a week or two there will be a full pressure again. IMPROVING THE ESTUARY, Opening up the bar and deepening the estuary were two topics discussed by speakers at the opening of the Sailing Club's season. Mr J. McCombs, M.P., said the Government estimated that a wall to improve the bar would cost £12,000, while the president of the club thought that £3OOO would be sufficient. Mr R» B. Owen urged all present to help to get direct access to the sea. The channels- could be deepened, the mud banks removed, and acres of reclaimed land built up for valuable reserves. The estuary, he said, was destined to become the marine playground of Canterbury. PERSONAL. Messrs Haase and Parsons have received a letter from the Sumner Borough Council congratulating them upon

their fine performance in the rescue recently effected on the coast towards Taylor’s Mistake. Miss S. M. Teinpler recently entertained a large number of guests at a gift afternoon for Miss Frances 1 Tamilton, of Burv Street. The Redcliffs Bridge Club held their final afternoon at the residence of Miss Souter, where a very enjoyable time was spent. The prizes were won by 1 Mrs J. I). Lawrence (Sumner), and Mrs J. Kempthorne (Redcliffs). Mr and Mrs Y. E. Hamilton (Scarborough), have returned from the North Island. BAND OF HOPE. The following contributed an excel lent programme at the last meeting of the Band of Hope. Song, choir; pianoforte solo, Pauline Cunningham; recitation, Gracic Williams; violin solo. Daphne Row; dance, Miss Joan Hughes; pianoforte ..duet. Miss and Master McMillan; recitation. Jack Robertson; dialogue, choir girls; part song, choir; pianoforte solo, Peggy Woodhead: vocal duet. Nolie Baxter and Peggy Browne; recitation, -Pauline Cunningham; dance, Dallas Ilenlev; item, Miss Joan Hughes; recitation, Dorothy Alexa.nder; , coon sofig, Harry Thompson and Lester Mulholland. The address was given by Rev. 5... - Hutchins, of Tennyson Street Congregational Church. -SUMNER CROQUET EFFORT. The. Sumner Croquet Club now owns the old tennis courts and by encouraging the sport amongst the scholars of the Sumner District High School and the junior players in the. district, hopes to maintain its efficiency. In order to help the funds, the supervisor, Mrs T. F. Chambers, has organised a junior fancy dress dance, to be followed by an adult dance. This will take place next Friday evening. SHAG ROOK CORNER. During the winter months this dangerous corner was improved bv the. re moval of tons of rock from the hill. The council is now submitting dulv approved plans for further widening to the district engineer of the Public Works Department, and hopes to make a good job of this undertaking. REDCLIFFS IM PROYEMENTS. The Public. Works Department has advised the Borough Council that before authority for the expenditure of £350 on the sea wail in Redcliffs can be. issued, plans and specifications must be submitted to the resident engineer in Christchurch. It is understood that these plans are in hand. REDCLIFFS BOWLING AND CROQUET. 'I he Redcliffs Bowling and Croquet Club lias planned to open its season this afternoon. The president, and Mrs A, H. Thompson, have issued a large number of invitations for the function, which takes place at 2.30 p.m. REDCLIFFS BRIDGE CLUB. The members of the Redcliffs Bridge ( lub celebrated the closing of the season with a most enjovable bridge afternoon at the residence of Mrs Tippett,

Monck’s Bay. Miss Souter won the prize which was given for the best score. During the afternoon, a delicious tea was dispensed to those pre sent, who included Mrs Tippett, Mrs Carter. Mrs Telford, Mrs Williams, Mrs Lee. . the Misses Souter, and Miss' E. Pender.
