SWIMMING CLUBS OPEN SEASON.

CHRISTCHURCH CLUB. The official opening of the Christchurch Swimming Club’s 1926-27 season took place at the West Christchurch D.H.S. baths this afternoon. There was a small attendance. Mr T. Hnrker, who made the formal ceremony, spoke of the club’s prospects. He hoped that club carnivals would be organised during the season, as these would foster the sport. felt sure that what the Christchurch Club lacked in ability it made, up in enthusiasm, and in the coming season would produce a- champion. Events got off during the afternoon resulted as follow: 75yds open— F. J Cook (9sec) 1, E. Turgiss (scr) 2, D. M’Kny (scr) 3. Won on the touch. Time—sß 2-ssec. 25yds junior—D. Donaldson (Bsoc) 1, W. Donaldson <6sec) 2, D. M’Lellan (scr) 3. Won by half a length. Time--18 2-ssec. 50yds breast-stroke (open)—R. D. H. Brown (12sec) 3, F. Daly (ssec) 2, T. Harker (lOsec) 3. Won by half a length. Time—sosec. 25yds girls—J. Harker (scr) 1, L. Harker (ssec> 2. Flying Squadron—C. tea. (Unwin, Donaldson, Cook) t; B team (M'Kay, Brown, M’Lellan) 2. Won by half a length. WHARENTI CLUB. In beautiful weather and with a good attendance the Wharenui Swimming Club opened their 1926-27 season this afternoon. Mr 11. S. S. Kyle, Mayor of Riccarton, attended end formally declared theh season open. Mr Kyle congratulated the club on Rte progress and spoke of the value of swimming as a clean sport that had the advantage of being a builder of health and physique. A programme of short events resulted as follows: 25yds men’s race—First heat: W. Brough 1, L. Hill 2. Time—l2Jsec. Seconod heat: J. Mounsey 1, A. Marshall 2. Time—l 3 1-5 sec. Final. Brough 1 Hill 2 Won on the touch. Time—l 3 l-seec. 25vds ladies’ race—Miss M. Buchanan 1, Miss C. Buchanan 2. Time—l9sec. Learners' width—T. Youth, 1. 75yds relav, for three teams —A. H. Jeoks, O. H. Watson and W. Clemens. 1: W. Brough, L. Hill and A- Marshall, 2; J. Mounsey. G. Berry and C. Riordan, 3. Time —44 2-fise<\ 50vds open—G. Watson 1. X. Clemens 2, W. Brough 3. A close finish. Time—--33 3-Bsec. _ Novelty event—A Jecks 1, Miss D. Saunders 2. _ . At the conclusion of the programme Mr H. S. S. Kyle presented trophies won during the last season. Theso were as *°Best" all-round performannoe in men’s section—Mr X. Clemens. Ladies—Miss M. Buchanan. BECKENHAM CLUB. The opening of the Beckenham Swimmins Club's ssason took place this atternoon. There was a large gathering of members, and. favoured by beautiful warm sunshine, bathers spent a very eniovable afternoon's amusement. It was ‘noticed that the largest proportion of bathers was juvenile and though no official races were held, great interest, was evinced by the youngsters in an informal programme.
