HEAVY MORTALITY LAST MONTH.
VITAL STATISTICS SHOW INFLUENZA TOLL. The heavy toll taken by pneumonic influenza last month is revealed by the vital statistics for the Christchurch metropolitan area. The number of deaths was 235, an increase of 101 over the total for July last year. The mortality among elderly people was particularly high. Last month's total of deaths was the largest, recorded in any one month since the influenza epidemic of 191 S.
