ASHBURTON COUNCIL HOLDS MEETING.

The Ashburton Borough Coupcil met last evening, when the Mayor, Mr R. Galbraith, presided. XVhen the balance-sheet for the year ended March 31 was received from the Government auditor, the Mayor stated that in three years the antecedent liability would be cleared off, and the council would then have more money to spend on the streets. The Canterbury Progress League wrote asking the support of local bodies in relieving unemployment. It was stated that the council had done what it could. Four extra men had been, employed at the Domain. A Wellington firm of financial brokers wrote drawing attention to a Bill brought before the House, making provision for a local Government loans’ board. Councillor Kerr thought that the executive of the Municipal Association should have moved in the matter. Ashburton councillors prided themselves on their judgment in raising a loan. They were town planners and the Government were law-makers. It was decided to write to the Municipal Association asking what, had been done. It was decided to warn two taxi proprietors against the practice of turning their cars between intersections. The tender of Mr T. Pethick of £2l 5s for renovating the Council Chamber and municipal offices was accepted. The necessity for showing the names of streets at intersections and corners was stressed by Councillor J.,\V. Bowden. The Town Clerk was Instructed to ascertain the number of streets to be placarded, and endeavour to Arrive at the cost that was entailed. XVith a view to minimising the risk of fire at kerbside petrol pumps. It was decided to enter into an agreement with the proprietors concerned, by which provision would be made for the hanging of fire extinguishers in handy positions. It was also agreed that notices be displayed at the expense of proprietors instructing motorists to observe the rule of the road in pulling up alongside petrol pumps.
