Mrs Lawn. Christchurch, is the guest of Mrs William Morgan, Methven. Miss Hilary (Westland) returned to Wellington yesterday. Miss Daisy M'Meekan. who has been spending a week in Springfield, returned to Christchurch on Saturday. Dr and Mrs W. Mark Brown, Papanui, will return this morning from Wellington.

The engagement, is announced of Maud Amelia, only daughter of Mr and Mrs F. P. Dudley, Ricearton, to Robert Henry, eldest son of Mr and Mrs T. C. Stratton, Sprcydon. An enjo>'able afternoon was given by Mrs A. E. Lee, Leitrim Street. Blenheim, in honour of her guest, Mrs Nathan Gill, of Christchurch. Those present included:—Mesdames Lee, Gill, Rose. Leslie, Foubister, Misses C. and G. Mills and Lorna Rose.

Recent guests at the New Brighton Cafe are:—Mr and Mrs A. M’Lachlan and two children (Christchurch), Miss M'Kiver (Christchurch), Mr and Mrs M. Christie and two children (Christchurch), Mr Wilson (New Brighton) and Miss Jekyll (Christchurch).

A social evening was given in the City Buffet last week by the guests and staff, as a farewell to Mr and Mrs Hyman, the proprietor and his wife. A pleasant evening was spent in music, songs and recitations. The departing guests were presented with a travelling rug. Opportxmity was also taken to welcome the new proprietor and his wife, Mr and Mrs Anderson.

A very enjoyable evening given in honour of Miss Gladys Clothier's twentieth birthday was recently spent at th'* residence of Mr and Mrs Williams. 266, Oxford Terrace. Musical items and dances ‘were enjoyed, also competitions, the prize winners being Miss G. Clothier. Miss E. Waldron, Mr J. Clothier and Mr D. Eastwood. The dance music was played by Mr A.

Clothier (piano) and Mr J. Bax (banjo*. Among those present were:—Mr and Mrs W. Williams, Mr and Mrs A. Clothier. Mr and Mrs 11. M’Nallw Mrs D. MFadgen, Mrs Nelson. Mrs A. Bennington. Mrs A. Smith. Misses M. MFadgen. F. Ogden, C. Spladgc. F. Aiming, E. Waldron and G. Clothier, Messrs K. Owen. E. Owen. D. Eastwood. Bax, R. M'Fadgen and J. Clothier.

An enjoyable evening was spent at the residence of Mr and Mrs G. 11. Burch y Clifton. Sumner, on Saturday, the occasion being the birthday of their daughter. Verna, whose engagement was also announced. Games and competitions comprised the greater part of the evening’s amusement. Musical items were contributed by Mrs Broadhurst and Mr P. Davison.- Competitions were won by Mrs Smith, Misses 11. Peterson and T. Smith and Messrs C. Smith. A. Cunninghanj and J. Cook. Among those present were : Mesdames Burch. Broadhurst and Smith, Misses Burch (3>. Petersoxi. Roswell, Smith and \\ illiams. Messrs Burch, Smith, Broadhurst. Rogel. Cimningham. Cook, Be! worthy. M‘Glinsky, Craib, Wilson, Davison and Palmer and Master Smith.

A very enjoyable evening was given by Mr and Mrs E. Ilall on Saturday at their home, 276, Hereford Street, the occasion being the thirteenth birthday of their daughter. A happy time was spent with music, singing and games: The dainty supper with the birthday cake surmounted by thirteen candles was a special feature of the evening. The guest of honour was the recipient of many beautiful gifts from her young friends. Those present included:—Mesdames Sumner. Meyer. Stretch and Ilorgan. pisses Dorothy and Bianche Hall, Monica Meyer, Ivy Stretch, Doris O’Connor, Irene Gillum, Joan Sutherland, Kathleen Smith, Rona M'S wigan, Evelyn and Sadie Fullen, Mona Smithers and Eileen Hendren, Masters Colin and Edgar Hall. Malcolm Stretch. Noel Meyer. Desmond Meyer. Albert . Hendren and Bernie Bastion. Adams. Ltd., will hold their second annual dance in the form of a novelty carnival at Dixieland this evening. Arrangements are well in hand to make the function a great success.
