ROSE WINS 2000 METRES OBSTACLE RACE.
RETIRES FROM INTERNATIONAL MARATHON AT LAST LAP. By Telegraph.—Press Assn.— Aus. and N.Z. Cable Association. COPENHAGEN, August 2. Ferris (England) won the Sparta Club’s international Marathon of 33.7 kilometres. Rose retired at the last lap. Rose won the two thousand metres obstacle race. CITY BUILDER WILL ERECT HOUSE FOR £3OO. A plan of a house which a local builder has offered to erect for £3OO has been handed to the Mayor (Mr J. K. Archer). The building inspector has perused the specification and is of opinion that it provides for a substantial four-roomed cottage, with scullery and ■wash-house combined, also a bath which would be supplied with hot water from the copper. There was no provision for wash-tubs, nor for connecting the premises with the main sewer, but an additional £SO would probably cover these items. The Mayor stated at last night’s meeting of the City Council that a firm of builders had offered to erect two such cottages within three miles of the chief post office, for £9OO, including purchase of the two sections, but as the sections were outside the city boundary the council’s housing scheme could not be availed of, as money was advanced only for houses o be built within the city. He would be pleased, however, to show the plan to any persons interested, and to give the name of the builders to anj'one wishing to erect cottages of that kind.
